‘Mickey 17’ Tops Box Office With Sluggish $19 Million USD Open

Bong Joon Ho’s R-rated film “Mickey 17,” featuring a dozen performances by Robert Pattinson, began its box office run with high hopes. However, despite being the top film domestically during its opening weekend, it managed a relatively low gross of $19.1 million USD from 3,807 cinemas.

As a die-hard fan, I’ve got to admit that while “Mickey 17” has taken the number one spot, it’s still a long journey towards profitability. The studio, Warner Bros., shelled out a whopping $118 million USD for its creation, an offbeat dark comedy space odyssey. It was given a ‘B’ on CinemaScore and a 79% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. To add to the production cost, another $80 million USD was spent on marketing, implying that the film needed to rake in around $275 million – $300 million worldwide just to break even. In its global release across 66 territories, it managed to gross a total of $25.4 million USD. Interestingly, in South Korea last weekend alone, it made $34.2 million USD overseas and $53.3 million USD globally.

Apart from claiming the top spot at the domestic box office, the movie broke new ground as the first Korean director to debut in the number one position. However, this past weekend saw a significant drop of almost 60% compared to the same period last year. Previously dominating for three consecutive weeks, Disney and Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World was dethroned to second place. Starring Anthony Mackie as Captain America, the film amassed a domestic total of $177 million USD and a worldwide collection of $370.8 million USD so far. The upcoming release Mickey 17 is yet to reveal its box office performance in the coming days.
