The successful spin-off for Jackie Chan’s most lucrative martial arts film series unexpectedly featured Michelle Yeoh, known as “Supercop 2”. For nearly three decades, Jackie Chan has graced multiple martial arts movie series, but the one that stands out the most is undeniably the “Police Story” franchise. Over a period of 28 years, this global martial arts legend appeared in six Police Story films.

From 1985 to 1996, I starred as Chan Ka-kui in four Police Story films. The series was revitalized in 2004 with New Police Story, where I took on a new character. Approaching a decade later, the franchise was resurrected again; Police Story 2013 served as a second reboot, but unfortunately, it didn’t continue beyond that point. Interestingly, these six movies don’t cover every title in the series. During the gap between the third and fourth films, a spinoff was produced, with Michelle Yeoh taking the lead role.

In the third installment of the “Police Story” series, known as “Police Story 3: Supercop”, the primary cast from the earlier films – Jackie Chan, Maggie Chueng, and Bill Tung – reprise their roles, joined this time by Michelle Yeoh. Having already shone in martial arts police movies like “Yes, Madam!” and “Royal Warriors”, Yeoh was given a prominent role in “Police Story 3”. Essentially, the film presents a partnership between Jackie Chan’s character, Chan Ka-kui, and Michelle Yeoh’s Jessica Lang.

Similar to Chan’s character, Yang is equally skilled in martial arts and serves as a police officer. In the film “Police Story 3”, they team up for a covert operation against a formidable drug syndicate in Hong Kong. Interestingly, Yeoh’s character was portrayed as being on par with Ka-kui, which is unusual in Jackie Chan action films. However, this approach served to set the stage for the franchise’s subsequent development – a spinoff titled “Supercop 2”, starring Michelle Yeoh and showcasing an array of intricately designed fight scenes.

Shifting the spotlight onto Michelle Yeoh’s character, Jessica Lang, the 1993 Hong Kong action movie unfolds following the events of her partnership with Ka-kui in “Police Story 3: Supercop”. Instead of battling a drug cartel like she did in “Police Story 3”, Yang finds herself engaged in a fight against a cunning band of bank robbers. As the story progresses, she becomes suspicious that this gang may have illicit ties to her boyfriend.

Despite not strictly falling under the category of a Police Story film or a Jackie Chan movie, Supercop 2 boasts impressive production values and a talented cast. The spinoff featuring Michelle Yeoh showcases an ensemble of renowned actors from the Hong Kong film industry, comparable in quality to Jackie Chan’s iconic action films from the ’80s and ’90s. Yu Rongguang, a martial arts legend recognized for his role as the Iron Monkey, portrays Jessica Lang’s suspicious boyfriend in this film, one of the top martial arts movies of the 1990s.

In addition to this, Supercop 2 features the return of two key figures from the initial series. Jackie Chan makes a special appearance, reprising his character as Chan Ka-kui. Notably, Bill Tung, who portrayed Ka-kui’s superior officer and mentor in every movie from the original Police Story series, is also present in Supercop 2, albeit with a lesser role.

In this production, Louis Fan plays a secondary character, and his presence might be familiar to followers of Donnie Yen. Fan has featured in numerous martial arts films starring Donnie Yen, including the initial two installments of the Ip Man film series. Additionally, Dick Wei, recognized for his roles in some of Shaw Brothers’ most iconic kung fu movies, and Mars, an actor with a history of involvement in numerous Jackie Chan films, as well as several entries in the Police Story series, make brief appearances too.

Before Michelle Yeoh rose to fame as an action star in “Police Story 3: Supercop”, she was relatively unknown. However, she had already garnered attention in the years leading up to the film, particularly for her lead role in the martial arts movie “Yes, Madam!”, which shared many characteristics with the “Police Story” series. Yeoh also starred in the sequel to this film, titled “Royal Warriors”. After that, she retired from acting in 1987, paving the way for Cynthia Khan to take over the “Yes, Madam!” franchise. It wasn’t until 1993 that Yeoh resumed her acting career, with Jackie Chan inviting her to join the “Police Story” series.

Jackie Chan’s autobiography, “Never Grow Up,” reveals that during their training sessions, Chan was practicing kung fu alongside Yeoh and Maggie Cheung, who portrayed his love interest in the “Police Story” films. In these instances, Chan asked Yeoh to join him as a co-star for “Police Story 3: Supercop.” The book explains that Chan desired her role to be an opportunity to exhibit her impressive martial arts abilities.

In “Police Story,” it was a significant debut for Chan, as the movie offered nearly equal action sequences to Michelle Yeoh and marked his first film with a female lead character in an action role. This move not only led to a spinoff series for her, but also paved the way for Yeoh to establish herself as a prominent martial arts actress. Following “Supercop,” Michelle Yeoh’s reputation grew even more as she starred in numerous impressive martial arts films such as “Wing Chun,” “Tai Chi Master,” and of course, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
