Michelle Yeoh breaks silence on Wicked: For Good’s Oscars snub: “Come on!”

I was so shocked when I heard Wicked: For Good didn’t get any Oscar nominations! Honestly, so was Michelle Yeoh. Everyone was expecting it to be a big contender, and it’s just crazy that it was completely overlooked. A lot of fans, like me, were really upset about it.

This follows last year’s success of the original Wicked, which received 10 nominations and won awards for both Costume Design and Production Design.

Michelle Yeoh was surprised that the song “For Good,” which she performed as Madame Morrible in the sequel, didn’t receive an Academy Award nomination.

I wasn’t expecting this, I’m completely shocked!” she shared with Variety. “Honestly, I really am. It’s frustrating because sometimes people assume that once someone has success with something, they should step aside and let others have a turn. But then you think, ‘Wait a minute, why not keep going if you’re still passionate?’

Michelle Yeoh, an Academy Award winner herself, called the film “a beautiful, well-made movie” and went on to commend the talented team who worked behind the scenes.

Paul Tazewell’s work on costume design, hair, and makeup is strong. She believes it stacks up well against other nominees this year.

Director Jon Chu, cinematographer Alice Brooks, and the set design team really impressed me. However, while the new Wicked: For Good builds on the original, it’s much more extravagant and features a lot of new locations, which ultimately left me feeling quite disappointed.

The Oscars will be held on March 15th, and the film Sinners leads the nominations with an impressive 16 – a new record! One Battle After Another is close behind with 13 nominations, and Marty Supreme, Sentimental Value, and Frankenstein each received nine.

This year, the awards are adding a new Casting category – the first in 25 years! Either Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent, or Sinners will be the first to win this award.
