Michelle Yeoh, 63, puts on a dazzling display in a glitzy gold gown as she tearfully accepts Honorary Golden Bear at Berlin Film Festival

Michelle Yeoh became emotional and wiped away tears while accepting the Honorary Golden Bear award at the Berlin Film Festival on Thursday.

The 63-year-old actress looked stunning in a sparkling gold dress when she went on stage to accept her award.

Michelle is well-known for her work in popular films and musicals like Wicked, Crazy Rich Asians, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and Tomorrow Never Dies.

Sean Baker, a celebrated filmmaker who recently worked with her on the short film Sandiwara—set to premiere in Berlin on Friday—invited her onto the stage.

He described Michelle Yeoh as a truly exceptional actress – someone who completely transforms a scene just by appearing in it. He explained that her presence instantly elevates the drama and makes everything feel more intense.

Sean added the Golden Bear award is ‘a symbol of artistic freedom, strength and fearlessness’.

I was so touched by his recent words about her. He really captured what so many of us feel – gratitude for all the incredible performances she’s given over the years. She truly set a new standard for everyone in the industry, and honestly, she constantly reminds us of the magic that first drew us to the movies. It’s a beautiful sentiment, and so well-deserved.

Michelle expressed deep gratitude and a feeling of awe. While ‘Lifetime Achievement’ sounds like the end of a journey, she sees it as a chance to pause, reflect on the past, and continue moving forward.

As someone who’s spent years helping people craft their best lives, I often reflect on unexpected journeys. It still amazes me to think that a girl like me, growing up in Malaysia with a love for structure, dance, and big dreams, could travel so far simply through the power of storytelling. It just goes to show you, anything is possible!

I’ve had a journey that’s taken me through many languages, cultures, and types of film, across different continents. It hasn’t always been easy, but I’ve always been driven by my love of movies and a desire to learn.

Making movies allowed me to explore all sides of myself – to be both strong and fragile, serious and playful, in control and willing to let go.

‘It gave me not just a career, but a life far larger than I ever dared to imagine.’

She concluded with a message for young artists, particularly those who feel overlooked or like they don’t fit in: remember that your unique perspective is valuable and already deserves to be heard. Don’t try to change who you are – your individuality is your strength.

The 76th Berlin Fill Festival kicked off with the world premiere of Shahrbanoo Sadat’s No Good Men.

Michelle looked fantastic and youthful as she posed for photos on the red carpet before the event.

The actress looked loved-up with her husband Jean Todt, whom she married in 2023.

Michelle spent her childhood in Ipoh, Malaysia. When she was a teenager, she went to London to study at the Royal Academy of Dance.

She first became famous in the 1990s with action movies from Hong Kong, and later starred in popular, critically-praised films like Crazy Rich Asians.

Michelle was honored with a Golden Bear award for her significant contributions to the world of film.

Past recipients of the award have included acclaimed figures like Helen Mirren, Martin Scorsese, Meryl Streep, Steven Spielberg, and Tilda Swinton.
