Michaela Strachan opens up about ‘extremely brutal’ double mastectomy surgery after breast cancer diagnosis

During a recent interview with Vanessa, Michaela Strachan shared candidly about undergoing a double mastectomy, referring to the process as “very harsh” or “intensely tough”.

59-year-old Springwatch host was taken aback when she learned in early 2014 that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer more than ten years prior.

Thankfully, following a double mastectomy and subsequent reconstructive surgery, she managed to fully recuperate.

Currently, Michaela has shared how deeply the ‘outdated’ process affected her emotionally, expressing her hope that within fifty years, a more effective treatment approach will be discovered.

On my chat with host Vanessa Feltz, 63, during her Channel 5 show, the cherished wildlife expert shared: “Initially, my breasts weren’t a significant aspect of my identity, but when they mentioned they would be removed, they suddenly held more significance than I ever imagined.

Hey there! As a die-hard showbiz enthusiast, I can’t get enough of A-list scandals, red carpet blunders, and everything in between. Experiencing something difficult leaves you with the belief that you will recover, but later on, you come to understand that it had a profound emotional impact on you.

I sincerely hope that, looking back on it after 50 years, people will consider breast removal as part of medical treatment to be outdated, since there should undoubtedly be more advanced methods available.

Michaela was questioned by Vanessa if the process was ‘excessively harsh’, and she responded with, ‘Indeed, it’s harsh!’

‘Removing a woman’s breasts is harsh. Frankly, I’d prefer not to have breasts at all and be here, than to have them and live in constant fear of cancer recurring.’

‘But it just seems extremely brutal.’

Michaela also discussed with the host her experience of recovering after having a double mastectomy, a surgery that approximately 15,000 women in the UK go through annually.

As a lifestyle expert, I would put it this way: “After my mastectomy, I’ll need about six weeks to heal, followed by another six weeks for the reconstruction process.

Over the years, there have been numerous physical exercises you’ve engaged in. Interestingly enough, here we are over a decade later, and despite having undergone a mastectomy, I find myself forgetting about it.

As a lifestyle advocate, let me express my sincere desire for open dialogue on this subject. I recall vividly how overwhelming it can feel in the moment, and I often found myself wondering, “When will I no longer dwell on it daily?” However, I’ve come to realize that it’s not about stopping the thoughts entirely, but rather learning to manage them effectively over time.

‘Now, day-to-day, I forget that I ever had breast cancer. I was really lucky.’

2014 was a particularly challenging year for me, as I lost my sister-in-law to cancer, a dear friend’s 35-year-old son, and my partner Nick Chevallier’s best friend to a heart attack. These losses have underscored the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with our loved ones.

She informed The Express, saying, “They were individuals around our same age. It’s hard to accept that I’m approaching my senior years, but it’s disheartening to realize how many individuals of my generation have passed away.

In a small coastal town along the South African coast, Michaela now resides with her partner and their child named Oliver. Over time, she’s taken on the role as an advocate for the charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer, consistently emphasizing the significance of undergoing routine mammograms.

She’s been persistently hosting Springwatch, and earlier this year, she danced on Dancing On Ice, partnered with professional skater Mark Hanretty.

Michaela achieved a remarkable feat when, at 58 years old, she advanced to become the most senior competitor in the finale of Dancing on Ice, setting a new record for the show.

Despite coming close to winning, she ultimately lost to Sam Aston at the last challenge. However, Michaela considered it an excellent opportunity to test herself beyond her usual limits.

Earlier this year, the presenter shared with TopMob that he believes it’s wonderful when one becomes a bit more experienced and has the courage to step beyond their usual boundaries.

Throughout my professional journey, I’ve consistently challenged myself beyond my usual limits, and it’s rewarding to keep stretching those boundaries.
