Michaela Coel has shared that she’s chosen egg-freezing as a method, expressing her desire for a family in the future.
As a devoted admirer and a woman of 37, I’ve publicly expressed that freezing my eggs seems to be the sole pathway for me to establish a family. Yet, I want to emphasize that I won’t lose my mind or feel desolate if motherhood doesn’t happen for me.
Since 2023, Michaela has been in a romantic partnership with her boyfriend, Spencer Hewett. She recently shared the story of how they first connected – through the celeb-friendly dating platform, Raya.
Michaela Coel, the star of Black Earth Rising, shared that she wasn’t contemplating having children at age 33 when she encountered Spencer. Instead, she was immersed in relishing life and dedicating herself to her professional endeavors.
She expressed to British Vogue that egg freezing is the method she intends to use. She deeply desires to establish a family.
I understand that having a family isn’t a necessity for me, because life can be an enigma sometimes. Even if I don’t have a family, it doesn’t mean the world will come to an end. Rest assured, I’ll continue to live and breathe as usual.

Michaela delved into exploring racial prejudices, specifically addressing the issue that dating apps may not favor Black women, while expressing her appreciation for her companion Spencer, who she finds to be both loyal and humorous.
She added: ‘He’s incredibly kind, intelligent, and devoted. He also has a great sense of humor, which puts me at ease.’
Social dating apps appear to show less interest in Black women, which I believe is a historical pattern perpetuated by media as well. This isn’t just an issue within our society; it’s global. It seems that there’s a bias towards recognition, and if one is more accustomed to seeing white faces, they tend to favor them. This trend is not exclusive to any particular region, but rather reflects a broader pattern of exposure.
It comes after Michaela admitted she has PTSD following her experience of racism at school.
In 2023, she shared with The Telegraph’s Arts section that her experience as a black student at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2009 was quite challenging or difficult.
In a 2023 interview with The Telegraph’s Arts division, she openly discussed facing tough times as a black student while attending the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2009.
A comprehensive examination conducted last year uncovered instances of a racially biased environment where several African-American students were repeatedly referred to with a derogatory slur, the N-word, and were allegedly subdued by their white instructors.
Upon learning that a page is devoted to her on the university’s website, she candidly admitted, “Given the intense post-traumatic stress disorder I’ve developed from my drama school days, I’ve never once looked back.
When inquired about having her picture taken down from the college’s website, she mentioned that it wasn’t a simple decision to make.

‘Showing someone’s picture can draw more people to a place, but I don’t want to compel or discourage anyone.’
Despite the challenging times I experienced there, I am grateful for who I have become today. I am a composite of all my experiences, both favorable and unfavorable. Reflecting on this, was it worth going there? That’s a multifaceted question indeed.
The representative from the school expressed sincere, unrestricted apologies for the racial discrimination that Michaela Coel and other former students faced during their time at the school.
‘The shared experiences they had were shocking and unsuitable; since then, we have been consistently working on a plan to eliminate systemic racism within our Acting Programme that has been in place for a long time. This effort involves commissioning an independent review into past instances of racism, as well as providing ongoing staff training and opportunities for self-examination.’
We’ve made some major changes to our Acting course structure as well. This includes reorganizing our faculty and focusing on a teaching and learning environment that values inclusivity, diversity, and student welfare.
It’s clear that this project is going to be an ongoing effort, with our focus being on establishing a workplace environment where inclusivity and equity are valued for all.
