Michael Usher opens up about his trainwreck interview with Sarah Ferguson: ‘Wasn’t that a hot mess!’
As a lifestyle expert with years of experience under my belt, I must say that the intriguing dynamics between public figures never cease to amaze me. The story of Michael Usher and Sarah Ferguson’s 2011 interview is a perfect example of the unpredictable nature of such interactions.
Michael Usher has opened up about his awkward interactions with Sarah Ferguson.
On Thursday, the Channel Seven reporter appeared on Nova 96.9’s Fitzy & Wippa show, along with Kate Ritchie, to discuss the major headlines that unfolded in 2024.
Reminiscing during our conversation, I brought up the memory of Michael’s interview with Sarah back in 2011 on 60 Minutes – a moment that still resonates vividly for me.
Wippa exclaimed, “Boy, was that a disaster!” Then, Kate Ritchie chimed in, expressing her curiosity, “I’ve never witnessed it. Could you two discuss it further?
During the car crash interview, the Duchess walked off mid-interview, before returning to speak to Michael.
The seasoned journalist found himself compelled to address her as Duchess, for she insisted on being referred to that way instead of Sarah, displaying an excessive amount of pomp and ceremony.

However, she was perfectly alright, and rather amiable. Yet, there came a sudden instant where she spun around and settling her back in the seat felt quite peculiar, almost absurd.
After her return, she resumed the interview, and it seemed as if a completely new person emerged, he remarked.
After the somewhat uncomfortable interview, the reporter and his team stepped outdoors, at which point Princess York hurriedly chased after them.
He shared that we stepped outdoors, and suddenly, the Duchess approached at a quick pace from behind. She discarded her high-heeled shoes and found herself barefoot on the grass. Excitedly asking, “Michael, how did it go?”, she was the one who posed the question.
At that point, I simply expressed, “Sarah, under similar circumstances, I’d feel compelled to request another chance in the room for that interview, as I’m unsure about what might have transpired.
After that, she said, “Oh, well, let me put it this way, who would like me to autograph a few books? I can personalize one for you. By the way, could you tell me the names of your children?” Then, she moved on from that topic.
A few weeks have passed since the Duchess shared insights on the maternal side of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
On the Jess Rowe Big Talk Show podcast, Sarah shared that the Queen felt more like a mother to her than her actual mother, as she honored the ‘remarkable’ and now deceased sovereign.

In conversation with host Jess Rowe, Sarah, who lost her mom in a car crash in Argentina back in 1998, shared that the royal woman served as a nurturing influence in her life.
She said: ‘The thing about the Queen was that she was more my mother than my own mother.
‘The Queen was an iconic, legendary, stalwart, steadfast, invisible hand of love behind your back.’
Despite their affectionate bond, Sarah often found it necessary to stay alert when in the presence of the Queen.
She continued: ‘I mean, she was the grandmother of the nation. She was the steadfastness of an extraordinary pillar of strength for the Commonwealth, for the nation, for Australia, for the world.’
Additionally, the Duchess shared some news about the Queen’s cherished dogs, Muick and Sandy, who currently reside with Sarah and Prince Andrew at the Royal Lodge in Windsor.
‘They are national treasures,’ Sarah said. ‘So they are very spoiled.’
In addition, Sarah has recently demonstrated her wit in her newest TikTok post, jesting that she is “a daily bride” while filming her preparations for a book signing event in Perth.
She chuckled, posting light-heartedly, “A bride every day!” This was said as her makeup was being retouched prior to the occasion.
She playfully commented, “Life is brief, so let’s not always be so serious!” Her video showcased a compilation of funny instances instead.
Royal fans rushed to social media to praise the Duchess for ‘her great sense of humour.’
They wrote: ‘Love Sarah she’s so real’;
‘Love fergie she is so down to earth’;
I’m really enjoying your cleverness! You’re such a blast to be around. Thanks for hopping on TikTok! Your posts are fantastic, and you always have a grounded, sunny disposition about you.
