Michael Sheen’s “high-quality” drama with stacked British cast is leaving UK streamer next week

Michael Sheen’s acclaimed film The Damned United is leaving BBC iPlayer very soon.

The 2009 sports film offers a somewhat fictional account of Brian Clough’s time as manager of Leeds United during the ’70s – a role that seemed unexpected given his past criticism towards the team.

Apart from Sheen, known for his role in Good Omens, the movie also boasts Jim Broadbent, who starred in Bridget Jones, Timothy Spall from Wicked Little Letters, Colm Meaney of Star Trek, Stephen Graham from Adolescence, and Joe Dempsie, a cast member of Game of Thrones.

In addition to Sheen, who played in Good Omens, the film includes Jim Broadbent (Bridget Jones), Timothy Spall (Wicked Little Letters), Colm Meaney (Star Trek), Stephen Graham (Adolescence), and Joe Dempsie (Game of Thrones).

In a matter of days, “The Damned United” will no longer be accessible on iPlayer. The final viewing opportunity will be on Thursday, 31st July, after which it won’t be viewable again (technically speaking, it remains available until 1:43am on Friday).

If you’re a Sky Cinema or NOW subscriber, the film is also available on those services.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film “The Damned United” boasts an impressive 92% positive rating based on 138 professional critic reviews, and it also has a strong 85% average score from approximately 50,000 user evaluations.

Here’s what some outlets said:

Screen Daily

The Damned United provides an ideal blend of football and delivers as a top-notch British drama, boasting excellent acting. It’s a great choice for both avid sports fans in the stands and those who may not be familiar with the intricacies of a 50/50 challenge.

The Guardian

In a brilliant portrayal, Sheen excels as Clough, shining yet isolated in the elite group of exceptional managers he referred to as the ‘top one’. His performance is marked by a dual nature – a harsh edge of cruelty intertwined with flashes of humor, making this role particularly fitting for him.

Detroit News

The movie ‘The Damned United’ offers a deep, engaging exploration of the pitfalls of ambition, which goes beyond the realm of soccer and delves into our shared humanity. Bravo!

The Damned United is available via Sky, NOW, and — for a few more days — on BBC iPlayer.

The latest edition of Digital Spy’s print magazine is out now! You can purchase the Oasis – Live in ’25’ issue from newsstands or online for only £8.99.
