Michael Sheen and Ruth Wilson transform in first look at real-life drama
As a dedicated fan of both captivating dramas and royal intrigue, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming release of “A Very Royal Scandal” on Prime Video. The first look at Michael Sheen as Prince Andrew and Ruth Wilson as Emily Maitlis has me on the edge of my seat, eagerly awaiting the series’ premiere next month.
The highly anticipated miniseries titled “A Very Royal Scandal” has revealed its initial glimpse, featuring Michael Sheen and Ruth Wilson metamorphosed into their principal characters.
The upcoming Prime Video series will narrate the tale of BBC correspondent Emily Maitlis (Wilson), who is set to question Prince Andrew (Sheen) on his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and the sexual abuse accusations made by Virginia Giuffre, during their Newsnight interview. It’s important to note that in 2022, Prince Andrew reached a settlement with Giuffre to conclude the civil lawsuit.
As a die-hard fan, I can hardly contain my excitement just days before our favorite show returns on September 19! The first glimpses of the upcoming series have finally dropped, and let me tell you, it’s going to be mind-blowing. Our beloved stars are barely recognizable in these new images; they’ve transformed so flawlessly into their characters that I can hardly believe my eyes! I simply cannot wait for this rollercoaster ride of emotions and suspense!
“One evening, for one hour, an interview changed the world’s perspective,” is a paraphrased version of the original synopsis. This synopsis refers to a real-life 2019 conversation between Emily Maitlis and Prince Andrew, which centered around allegations against him concerning his association with Jeffrey Epstein and Virginia Giuffre.
The narrative entitled “A Very Royal Scandal” delves into the events surrounding Maitlis and Prince Andrew prior to the interview, the unprecedented interview itself, and the numerous unresolved issues it sparked that ultimately transformed their lives irrevocably.
Alongside Sheen and Wilson, the three-act play additionally features Joanna Scanlan, Alex Jennings, Éanna Hardwicke, and Claire Rushbrook. Julian Jarrold serves as director for the screenplays written by Jeremy Brock.
Maitlis, in her role as an executive producer, had earlier discussed Wilson’s selection for the series. She expressed her surprise, considering Wilson’s past portrayals of complex and troubled characters.
In a casual, easy-to-understand manner, “Usually, I notice her grasping her wrists, tugging at her sweaters, and losing strands of hair while appearing disheveled and dazed from drinking. However, in this context, it might still be effective,” Maitlis commented.
Apart from praising the rest of the cast as exceptional, Maitlis confessed her apprehension about the retelling, expressing: “Certainly I was petrified… Certainly some of the scenes carry a deep emotional impact.”
A Very Royal Scandal premieres on Prime Video on September 19.
