Michael Sheen and Channel 4 embroiled in legal row over Secret Million Pound Giveaway documentary
Michael Sheen finds himself entangled in a legal dispute with Channel 4 regarding their production, “Michael Sheen’s Hidden Charity Venture.
As reported by The Guardian, an autonomous group of TV creators are casting doubt on Charlie Sheen’s documentary produced by Channel 4, pointing out striking resemblances between it and their own 2021 production titled “Bank Job”.
Attorneys representing filmmakers Daniel Edelstyn and Hilary Powell have penned a letter to Sheen and the creators of his documentary, alleging that they had discussed the 2021 film “The Bank Job” with Sheen, who subsequently produced a program bearing similarities.

In my gaming world, I’d put it like this: “As a gamer from Port Talbot, I’m Michael Sheen – the Good Omens star who’s stepping into a new role. Instead of wielding a sword or casting spells, I’m using £100k of my own cash to erase a massive £1m debt burden that’s been weighing down my fellow townsfolk. It’s not about points or levels, it’s about helping those around me.
In the movie titled “Bank Job“, directors Edelstyn and Powell employed debt specialists to pinpoint approximately £1 million in high-interest debts belonging to residents of Walthamstow. With a fund of around £40,000, they successfully acquired the entire portfolio.
Between 2017 and 2020, Edelstyn and Powell communicated, primarily through emails and video calls, with Charlie Sheen and his team regarding his potential participation in their project.
The legal representatives for the duo wrote a note to Michael Sheen, expressing their backing of his endeavors to assist individuals unfairly treated in the UK. However, they raised doubts about the authenticity of the Channel 4 documentary.
According to a representative for Sheen, Michael has frequently expressed that he was motivated to undertake such an action after witnessing John Oliver purchase medical bill debt in the U.S. back in 2016. Given Michael’s long-standing advocacy for financial inequity, it’s no surprise that Full Fat TV approached him with their ambitious plan.
They requested that Michael produce a persuasive video aimed at reforming the debt and credit purchasing sector, using his personal funds of £100,000 to erase debts for individuals within his local area.
A representative from Full Fat TV, producers of Michael Sheen’s documentary, stated that they “created and proposed the idea for Michael Sheen’s Secret Million Pound Giveaway to Channel 4 on their own. It’s unfortunate that an essential message about the unjust credit system in our country, which Michael personally invested £100,000 to emphasize, might be overshadowed by these unwarranted accusations.
In the meantime, Channel 4 stated that they were unaware Sheen had communicated with Optimistic. A representative from Channel 4 commented: “The two shows are fundamentally distinct, and it’s absurd to insinuate that one is a replica of the other.
Purchasing debts and writing them off is a well-known method, often discussed in various media outlets. The individual who approved and oversaw Michael Sheen’s ‘Million Pound Giveaway’ was unaware of the movie ‘Bank Job’, however.
