Everyone remembers the Friends episode where Joey (Matt LeBlanc) gets to act in a movie with a famous actor (Gary Oldman). The funny part was that Oldman had a habit of spitting while speaking! Recently, Michael Shannon shared a story about working with Leonardo DiCaprio for the first time, and it wasn’t funny at all. Instead of humorous, Shannon described the experience as deeply embarrassing.
Shannon recently appeared on The Julia Cunningham Show, where the conversation turned to his past work with famous actors. He mentioned the film Revolutionary Road, explaining that although his role wasn’t large, he shared a memorable scene with Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, and Kathy Bates. It was during the filming of this scene that he experienced a particularly embarrassing moment, and he began to explain what happened by saying,
I recall everything quite clearly, though my time on set wasn’t extensive. I was mainly involved in a single scene in the woods, followed by one in the dining room. It was kind and generous of Leo to wait until last for his close-up; typically, the lead actor films their scenes first. He was incredibly patient, and even after numerous takes, he managed to deliver a fresh and authentic performance each time – that’s what really makes a great actor.
During a dinner scene, Frank and April share the news that they’re expecting a baby. While everyone is initially happy, Michael Shannon’s character becomes enraged because it means Frank and April will no longer move to Paris as planned. He angrily blames Frank, aggressively confronting him – and reportedly, the actor accidentally drooled on Leonardo DiCaprio during the scene.
Recounting the memory in excruciating detail, Shannon continued,
During a scene, I playfully teased Leonardo DiCaprio, but then I accidentally drooled on his pants! I was mortified and felt bad about giving him a hard time after that. Surprisingly, he didn’t even seem to notice during the scene and kept acting. Afterwards, I apologized, but he was incredibly gracious about it, brushing it off and saying it wasn’t a problem at all.
Just in case you’re curious or have forgotten: the scene with the drool wasn’t included in the final version of the movie, as you can see in the Revolutionary Road clip below.
Leonardo DiCaprio has a story about an on-set mishap too. While filming Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, he actually broke a glass with his hand during a dramatic scene, resulting in real blood on the set. While it’s not quite the same as Michael Shannon accidentally drooling on Leonardo DiCaprio in front of Kate Winslet and Billy Zane, it does illustrate that things can get a little chaotic during movie production.
If you’d like to watch the full movie Revolutionary Road, it’s not on any streaming services right now. However, you can easily buy or rent it digitally, and it’s also available on Blu-ray for those who prefer physical copies.
