Michael Mosley: Wonders Of The Human Body review: There will never be anyone quite like the great Michael Mosley again

As an ardent fan who has followed Dr Michael Mosley’s journey through the wonders of human health for years, I find myself deeply moved and profoundly saddened by his untimely passing, yet simultaneously enchanted by the vitality and zest he exuded in this series.

Michael Mosley: Wonders Of The Human Body (Channel 5)

Watching the energetic and beloved Daily Mail medical expert, Dr. Michael Mosley, bounding about in high spirits, captured on film a few months prior to his untimely death during vacation, stirs up a torrent of feelings.

It’s disheartening to observe him clearly anxious about his own death, it breaks my heart to watch him throw himself into research and physical challenges, yet it’s joyful to behold his unending enthusiasm for living.

Among all presenters, none exhibited a greater passion or clarity in explaining our health, his personal health, the wonders of medicine, and groundbreaking scientific advancements than Dr Mosley.

In the initial installment of this enlightening three-part series, I found myself immersed in the hallowed halls of Oxford University, embarking on a personal journey to unravel the mysteries surrounding potential heart disease. This is Michael Mosley: Wonders Of The Human Body (Ch5).

The situation clearly disturbed him greatly. It’s known that his father passed away due to heart disease at the age of 74. When Michael was 66, before undergoing a heart test, he confessed that he couldn’t sleep because of his concerns: ‘I was extremely anxious.’

Following the injection of the dye, they performed a CT scan on his arteries to examine them. To his surprise and concern, it appeared that plaque was starting to accumulate, gradually restricting important blood vessels.

As I gaze upon this, I can’t help but feel a chill run down my spine. It’s like staring straight into the face of an impending crisis, a looming health scare lurking just around the corner – a time bomb, ticking away.

However, the examination showed that the plaques were stationary and not likely to rupture, thereby averting an immediate crisis. The doctor estimated his chance of experiencing a heart attack within the next eight years as approximately 5.9%.

A heavy veil of bittersweet irony shrouded the entire event. In June this year, during a vacation with his wife Claire in Crete, he went for a walk under the scorching afternoon sun and apparently succumbed to the heat. Despite an urgent search effort, his body wasn’t found for several days.

It’s nearly unbelievable that, given how vibrant and energetic he was throughout this series, he had so little time remaining before he passed away.

Instead of diving headfirst (fully clothed) into a bathtub, he shared an interesting fact: On average, a human’s mouth generates enough saliva within three months to fill not only the tub but even beyond its capacity!

Next, he moved to another medical facility, where they inserted a camera through his nostril and into the rear of his esophagus.

While he talked, laughed, and swallowed, it was clear how the flexible, pink-hued cartilage known as the epiglottis prevented food and spit from entering his windpipe instead.

A close-up of him swallowing a bite of banana gave me ‘the ick’, as Love Islanders say, but it was weirdly interesting too.

Despite his initial reluctance to swim in the freezing North Sea near Ayrshire, he braved up and put on a wetsuit for a try at cold-water immersion, instead choosing the more temperate waters of Bath, Somerset.

He dispatched several customers to a home improvement store, where they were given carts equipped with heart monitors within their handles.

It was all great fun, informative and slightly wacky. There will never be anyone quite like him.
