Michael Morales is the UFC Vegas 96 fighter to watch

As a fan with a knack for spotting rising stars in MMA, I am genuinely excited about the upcoming UFC APEX event on August 24. However, among all the intriguing matchups, one fighter has truly caught my eye – Michael Morales. This undefeated prospect from Ecuador is a force to be reckoned with, and his journey to the UFC is nothing short of inspiring.

On August 24th, the UFC APEX will feature a fight night with a main event showdown between middleweight contenders Jared Cannonier (ranked No. 5) and Caio Borralho (ranked No. 12). This veteran versus young prospect battle is just one of several such matchups scheduled for this card, giving it a distinct theme of seasoned fighters facing up-and-coming talents. In the co-main event, Angela Hill (ranked No. 9) will square off against Tabatha Ricci (ranked No. 11) in a women’s strawweight bout. While these matchups are certainly intriguing, there is one fighter on the card who has garnered particular interest: Michael Morales, an undefeated rising star in the welterweight division.

Born in Ecuador, Morales has a rich history in martial arts, particularly judo and wrestling. He excelled in wrestling competitions during his youth. When he was 14, he commenced training mixed martial arts in Machala, Ecuador. After four years of rigorous training, he made his professional debut in 2017. For the following five years, Morales competed in various MMA leagues across South America, emerging victorious in every bout. In his first eleven fights, he secured nine knockouts, one submission, and one decision.

Eventually, the UFC recognized Morales’ potential and provided him an opportunity in Dana White’s Contender Series in September 2021. Facing Nikolay Veretennikov, Morales demonstrated superiority, winning the fight by a unanimous decision and securing a UFC contract. His first UFC bout was initially scheduled for UFC 270 against Trevin Giles in January 2022, but due to frequent injuries among fighters causing fights to be postponed, his debut on the main card became an excellent chance for him to showcase his abilities on a significant platform. Although he was momentarily shaken and taken down early, Morales persevered to score a first-round knockout in his UFC debut.

At UFC 277 in July 2022, Morales encountered Adam Fugitt in his next bout. Fugitt presented a challenge with his competitive striking and aggressive wrestling approach. Remarkably, Morales managed to thwart seven out of eight of Fugitt’s takedown attempts until a stoppage victory came his way in the third round. Given that Fugitt was a last-minute replacement for the original opponent, Ramiz Brahimaj, who withdrew two weeks prior, it’s plausible that Morales struggled due to the stylistic differences. Additionally, Morales had been away from competition for a year following his withdrawal from a scheduled fight with Rinat Fakhretdinov in late 2022 due to an injury. However, he bounced back with two consecutive unanimous decision wins over Max Griffin in July 2023 and Jake Matthews in November 2023.

Michael Morales fights Neil Magny at UFC Vegas 96

On August 24, Morales is set to fight against the 12th-ranked Neil Magny. This battle marks the most challenging and experienced opponent Morales has encountered so far. This bout presents an excellent opportunity for Morales to showcase his skills and potentially secure a place in the welterweight rankings. Magny prefers long-range striking with his extended 80-inch reach, while Morales boasts sharper strikes with his slightly shorter 79-inch span. Magny is also known for his love of clinch wrestling, but Morales’ superior wrestling experience could give him the edge in grappling encounters. Calf kicks will be an easy target for Morales, potentially leading to headshots and a potential knockout.

As a gamer (or fan) following UFC’s Morales closely, it’s evident that despite some nail-biting matches lately, this young gun is just 25 and continuously honing his skills. With no recent fights under his belt, it remains a mystery what areas he’s been focusing on to enhance his performance. However, the anticipation is high as we might witness Morales truly shine in his prime, delivering an impressive win against Magny. Those close battles could have served as valuable lessons for him, helping identify weaknesses in his game for improvement. Keep your eyes peeled for Morales on the upcoming fight card; he’s a potential powerhouse at welterweight you won’t want to miss!
