Michael Madsen’s Oscar-nominated sister Virginia Madsen seen for first time since brother’s death

Virginia Madsen has been seen publicly for the first time since her brother, Michael Madsen, unexpectedly passed away in July.

The 64-year-old actress, nominated for an Oscar, was seen in Los Angeles with her 93-year-old mother, Elaine Madsen. This was about three months after the death of the actress’s ‘Kill Bill’ co-star, who passed away at age 67 from a heart attack.

Oh my gosh, you guys, I nearly died when I saw the photos! Virginia and Elaine were *holding hands*! It was such a rare, perfect moment, and they both looked absolutely stunning in these gorgeous, coordinated outfits – all whites and soft lavender. Seriously, it was a dream!

The star made her film debut in 1983 with a small part in Class opposite Rob Lowe.

Her breakout role came the following year when she played Princess Irulan in David Lynch’s Dune.

And she was the main attraction in the horror film Candyman (1992).

Other films of note included The Prophecy (1995), Ghosts of Mississippi (1996), and The Rainmaker (1997).

Virginia Madsen received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 2005 for her role as Maya Randall in the film *Sideways* (2004).

He has also worked on several other projects, including the radio show *A Prairie Home Companion* (2006), the film *The Number 23* (2007), *The Haunting in Connecticut* (2009), *Joy* (2015), and *Lola* (2024).

Virginia met actor and director Danny Huston while working on the 1988 film, Mr. North. They married in 1989 but later divorced in 1992.

He had a large role on Yellowstone but was killed off; the show returns on November 10.

Virginia and Antonio Sabàto Jr. were together from 1993 to 1998 and have a son together.

And she wed Gilmore Girls actor Nick Holmes in 2020.

Following Michael’s shock death, Virginia paid a heartbreaking tribute to him. 

‘My brother Michael has left the stage,’ Virginia said. 

He was a fascinating mix of power and gentleness, a playful spirit with a kind heart. He seemed like a rebel, but with the soul of a poet. Above all, he was a devoted family man – complex and full of contrasts, but ultimately defined by a deep and lasting love.

She explained they weren’t grieving a celebrity or an idealized image, but a real person – someone vibrant, passionate, and full of life. This person lived boldly and left behind a lasting impression – a mix of strength and tenderness, unforgettable and unique.

In a statement to Variety, she shared how much she’ll miss the simple joys of knowing him – their private jokes, his infectious laugh, and just hearing his voice. She said she especially cherishes memories of him as a person, before he became famous, and remembers him fondly as an older brother.

We’re grateful for all the kind messages and memories you’ve shared. We’ll announce details about a celebration of his life later, but right now, we’re focusing on being together and allowing ourselves time to grieve. Some feelings are too big for words.

The star’s manager Ron Smith claimed to the Daily Mail that Madsen had died from ‘cardiac arrest.’

Michael Madsen’s representatives shared that he had been actively and successfully working on independent films for the past two years, including the upcoming movies *Resurrection Road*, *Concessions*, and *Cookbook for Southern Housewives*. He was excited about what the future held.

Madsen was getting ready to publish a new book titled ‘Tears For My Father,’ a collection of poems and reflections.

Michael Madsen was famous for working often with director Quentin Tarantino. He appeared in several of Tarantino’s films, including *Reservoir Dogs* (1992), *Kill Bill: Volume 2* (2004), *The Hateful Eight* (2015), and *Once Upon a Time in Hollywood* (2019).

He also starred in 1997’s Donnie Brasco as Sonny Black

Madsen is survived by his five children. His son Hudson died by suicide in 2022 aged 26.
