Michael Keaton “didn’t care” about Batgirl film cancellation

As a gamer with a heart full of nostalgia and a wallet always ready for the next big flick, I must say, Michael Keaton‘s nonchalance about the Batgirl movie cancellation left me scratching my head like Batman himself. It was a project that looked promising, and it’s always disappointing when great stories don’t see the light of day.

Michael Keaton has admitted he wasn’t really bothered when Batgirl was cancelled.

In the highly anticipated live-action debut of Batgirl, the renowned actor was all set to return to his role as Batman, with Leslie Grace taking on the lead character. The talented ensemble also featured Brendan Fraser portraying the antagonist Firefly and JK Simmons playing Jim Gordon, Batgirl’s father.

The filming for the movie started in 2021, and by then, Batgirl had already reached its post-production phase. However, Warner Bros surprisingly cancelled it, leaving many cast members disheartened. Interestingly, Keaton stated that he was not among those who were upset about the decision.

He informed GQ, “I really didn’t mind either way.” To clarify, he said, “It was a large, enjoyable, lucrative event,” as he gestured by rubbing his fingers together, indicating money.

Nonetheless, Keaton empathized with Batgirl directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah following the project’s cancellation. “I get along well with them; they are decent chaps,” he remarked.

As a supporter, I cheer them on, hoping they achieve their goals. Their struggles touch me deeply, and it’s hard not to empathize with their pain. It’s disheartening when they face difficulties, and it reflects poorly on my own spirits. However, in terms of myself, I’m doing just fine.

Regardless of how he felt about the end of Batgirl, the actor remains proud of his eminent Batman role, having first portrayed it in 1989. He expressed, “I am nothing but full of respect and gratitude, a hundred percent.”

In addition, Keaton is set to return as a beloved character once more in the forthcoming sequel of “Beetlejuice”.

In a new take on the classic film “Beetlejuice”, we find Beetlejuice once again in action. This time, he is reconnected with Lydia Deetz, played by Winona Ryder. Lydia is now trying to rescue her daughter, Astrid (portrayed by Jenna Ortega). The original Tim Burton film stars Catherine O’Hara, Monica Bellucci, Burn Gorman, Danny DeVito, Arthur Conti, and Willem Dafoe.

Keaton clarified the unsettling nature of the character: “He’s more like a mysterious entity, less human – more of a force or presence, if you will. I didn’t use ‘it’ for political correctness; instead, I found him to be an unidentifiable and powerful influence.”

“I mean, there’s definitely strong male energy, like stupid male energy, which I love,” he added.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is in cinemas on September 6.
