Michael Kagan Shifts Gears with Formula 1-Inspired ’Downforce’ Exhibition

In a vibrant display, Brooklyn-residing artist Michael Kagan breathes life into his fresh solo exhibition titled “Downforce” through the creation of 16 dynamic collages, drawing inspiration from the exhilarating realm of Formula One motor racing.

Transitioning from canvas to paper, Kagan skillfully combines monoprints, crafted with squeegees and brushes, to depict the power, action, and excitement inherent in the sport. The exhibition’s title, Downforce, is a nod to the aerodynamic force that keeps Formula 1 cars firmly planted on the track as they race at speeds exceeding 200 mph. For Kagan, this concept also embodies human resilience and mastery over intense pressure situations.

The collages highlight notable Formula One events, such as Lewis Hamilton’s inaugural Grand Prix victory in “Global Player” and the dramatic crash involving Fernando Alonso and Charles Leclerc in both “Moving Through Time” and “Space.” Rather than emphasizing physical traits, Kagan employs vibrant colors and sponsor branding to depict drivers such as Kimi Räikkönen and Fernando Alonso, transforming them into almost mythical, superhero-esque figures.

Michael Kagan’s Downforce exhibition is on view at Pace Prints until April 26.
