Michael J. Fox has shared that he now relies on assistance to move around, explaining he’s suffered numerous broken bones while living with Parkinson’s disease.
Michael J. Fox, the famous actor from Back to the Future, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 when he was only 29 years old. He shared the news with the public seven years later.
Now, Michael has opened up about how the progression of his condition means he no longer walks.
Michael shared that he’s broken bones in the past, and now worries about falling and breaking more, so he’s hesitant to move around too much.
He explained that his tendency to break bones started when he was at the height of his acting career, performing physically demanding stunts like somersaults and sliding across cars.
He told The Sunday Times that’s when he loses control and starts breaking things, and he’s amazed by how much damage he’s caused.

Over the course of three years, I suffered a broken elbow, a broken hand, and a serious hand infection that nearly resulted in the loss of a finger.
Michael explained that he’s taking things slower these days and doesn’t walk as much as he used to. While he still *can* walk, he admits it’s difficult and poses a bit of a risk.
Despite living with this illness for many years, Michael remains determined to reach his goals, both at work and in his personal life.
For many years, Michael J. Fox has been a leading voice in Parkinson’s research. His foundation, the Michael J. Fox Foundation, has collected over $2 billion, helping scientists make significant progress in understanding and treating the disease.
I was so worried when Michael had to step away from acting back in 2020 because of his health, but I’m thrilled to see him back on screen! He just filmed a role on *Shrinking*, which is a fantastic show on Apple TV, and he’s also busy promoting his new book, *Future Boy* – his fifth one! It’s just amazing to see him doing so well.
Seeing the work of others gives me hope that I can discover my own path as both an actor and a writer,” he shared with People.
‘And as a parent, husband and friend, I have a lot left to do.’
In the movie *Shrinking*, starring Harrison Ford, Michael played a character living with Parkinson’s disease, a first for the actor.
He explained that this was the first time he’d been on set without having to worry about feeling unwell or being too tired. He could simply focus on the work itself.
Despite the challenges Parkinson’s presents with movement, speech, and coordination, he continues to face the condition with a practical and optimistic attitude.
He explained that he starts his day by getting a sense of what it will hold and then tries to prepare himself for it.
I’m constantly facing new physical hurdles, but I manage to overcome them. I rely on a wheelchair quite a bit, and it definitely took some time to adjust.
Still, Michael explains he tries to ‘take the good’ and ‘seize it’ whenever given the chance.
Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe what Michael said! He was talking about the last year, and after getting the Presidential Medal of Freedom way back in January – can you even imagine?! – he said everything has just been… amazing! He used words like ‘really positive’ and ‘really energizing,’ and honestly, it just *sounds* like he’s thriving, and it makes me so happy! It’s like all his hard work is finally paying off, and he’s just glowing. I’m obsessed!
‘If you put your mind to it,’ he insisted. ‘You can do anything.’

Actor Michael J. Fox and his wife, Tracy Pollan, have been married since 1988 and have four children: Sam, age 36, twin daughters Aquinnah and Schuyler, both 30, and Esmé, 23.
Michael noticed a persistent sore shoulder while filming the movie Doc Hollywood, which led to a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease in 1991. He was only 29 years old at the time.
The actor went public with his diagnosis in 1998.
Michael had previously collaborated with Bill Lawrence, the co-creator of Shrinking, on the ABC comedy Spin City. He departed the show after its fourth season in 2000 as his Parkinson’s symptoms became more challenging.
