The Agency: Central Intelligence returns with more action and betrayal in season 2.
This spy series, based on the French show The Bureau, recently updated its name for the new season after previously being known as simply The Agency. The first season follows CIA agent Martian (Michael Fassbender) who is called back to London from a long-term undercover assignment. Things become more complicated when his former lover, Dr. Sami Zahir (Jodie Turner-Smith), unexpectedly reappears. The season ends with several surprising developments, including Martian taking on a dangerous new role as a double agent.
Paramount+ has revealed a trailer and some first-look images for season 2, and announced it will premiere on June 21st with all ten episodes available at once. The trailer begins with Martian admitting he’s a traitor – that he betrayed his country, hurt people, and lied to those he worked with – and believes he deserves whatever comes next. Despite everything, he insists he’d make the same decisions again. You can watch the trailer below.
The trailer, set to the song “Renegade,” opens with Martian announcing a major shake-up within the agency. We then see Sami imprisoned in Sudan, followed by Bosko (played by Richard Gere) urging everyone to do whatever is necessary. A search for a traitor is revealed to be underway, and the trailer cuts between fast-paced action sequences around the world, culminating in Martian declaring his newfound power.
I’m really excited to see familiar faces back for the new season! Alongside Michael Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson, and Richard Gere, Jeffrey Wright, Katherine Waterston, and John Magaro are all returning as their characters – Henry Ogletree, Naomi, and Owen Taylor. They’ve released some new photos of everyone, and it’s great to get another look at them.
Season 2 of The Agency centers around Martian, a CIA operative living a double life. He’s determined to rescue his lover, Samia, who’s been imprisoned in Sudan, and he’ll go to any lengths – even betraying others – to do so. The deeper he gets involved, the more dangerous things become, forcing Martian to navigate a treacherous path to save Samia, his own life, and complete his mission.
Felipe Rangel at ScreenRant gave the first season of The Agency a 7/10 rating, highlighting the show’s complex characters, strong performances from its cast, and captivating mysteries. He did note that the dialogue sometimes felt overly explanatory. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave the show a 66% rating, while audiences scored it higher at 77%.
Jez and John-Henry Butterworth created and wrote The Agency, and also oversee the show as showrunners and executive producers. The brothers are also known for their work on films like Edge of Tomorrow, Ford v. Ferrari, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Season 2 of The Agency: Central Intelligence also features executive producers including Fassbender, George Clooney, David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, Bob Yari, Grant Heslov, Alex Berger, Ashley Stern, Pascal Breton, Joe Wright, and Keith Cox.
The Agency: Central Intelligence season 2 comes to Paramount+ on June 21.
