Michael Dorn was asked to appear on Star Trek: Discovery several times

As a devoted Star Trek fan who has followed Michael Dorn’s career since his iconic role as Worf, I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment that he didn’t get to grace our screens on Discovery. The idea of seeing him embody a character other than the Klingon we’ve come to know and love would have been a refreshing twist.

In the vast realm of Star Trek, I, Michael Dorn, have donned the battle-hardened visage of Worf more times than any other actor. Yet, an enticing opportunity presented itself in the form of Star Trek: Discovery – a role that could’ve taken me away from the familiarity of the Klingon Empire. Given Discovery’s narrative unfolds before Star Trek: The Original Series and its unique interpretation of the Klingons, it seems unlikely I would have continued my service as one.

During an interview on the Inside of You Podcast (via Screenrant), Dorn mentioned that he was frequently invited to join Discovery, indicating ongoing discussions. However, it seems that the producer at the time, possibly Bryan Fuller, was terminated, and this shift in leadership appears to have altered the course of events. It’s worth noting that Bryan Fuller did indeed depart from Discovery due to creative disagreements.

I was asked several times to be part of that new universe, but because of just circumstances… just that sort of one thing that happens… nothing to do with me… but something happens like on Discovery, they said hey, we want you to come back and do this character. It would be great. We’ll show you… Scripts, everything… I was talking to the producer… The producer gets fired, and they bring in a whole ‘nother crew. So it’s those type of things. So that was going on for a long time. Then one time, I just went, ‘Okay, that’s it. I’m not going to think about this anymore.’

Michael Dorn

Having Michael Dorn join the crew of Discovery for its first season would undoubtedly be a nod to devoted Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine fans, regardless of whether he would’ve portrayed a Klingon character. After all, Dorn is not only recognized for the prosthetics he wore but also for his distinctive voice, so any role he took on, viewers would immediately recognize him.

Although Dorn didn’t actually appear in Discovery, it would have been intriguing to witness him portray a new character on the show, particularly if it had allowed for an encounter between his character and Discovery’s depiction of Klingons.
