Michael Caine’s classic near-perfect spy thriller is now streaming on the BBC

The iconic spy thriller The Ipcress File, starring Michael Caine, is once again available to stream on BBC iPlayer, following its recent broadcast on BBC Two.

Okay, so as a fan, I just found out this movie will only be on iPlayer for about 28 days. After that, we’ll have to wait until it’s broadcast again – looks like that might be sometime in November or December, if past years are anything to go by.

The 1965 movie features Michael Caine as Harry Palmer, a spy who’s tasked with finding out what happened to a group of leading scientists. It was made by some of the same people who created the early James Bond films, but with a grittier, more realistic feel.

When it was released, the film received three BAFTA Awards, one of which was for Best British Film. It was also recognized as one of the greatest British films ever made, appearing on the BFI’s list of the Top 100 British Films of the 20th Century.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has received very positive reviews, with a 97% approval rating based on 32 critic reviews.

A few years ago, ITV created a new version of The Ipcress File starring Joe Cole, who is also known for his roles in Peaky Blinders and Gangs of London.

He explained that when taking on the role, he aimed to create his own interpretation and avoid simply imitating the actor’s unique speech pattern.

While watching the movie, I became concerned I might unconsciously start mimicking Michael Caine. He’s such a recognizable and charismatic actor, and his on-screen personality is so strong that I worried I’d pick up his mannerisms without even realizing it.

Despite the movie having several sequels, it seems the TV show won’t be renewed for another season.
