The iconic 1971 British gangster film Get Carter, starring Michael Caine, is now available to stream in the UK – a great option for keeping the men in your family entertained during the holidays.

The movie features Michael Caine as Jack Carter, a powerful gangster from London. He travels back to northeastern England following the death of his brother.

Driven by a desire for revenge, he returns to his hometown of Newcastle and gets back in touch with people he used to know. However, those in power aren’t happy about his return.

In a review of the 2022 re-release, The Guardian praised the film as a definitive crime classic. They described it as a masterful British crime film—gritty, unsettling, and unforgettable—and highlighted Michael Caine’s performance as the best of his career.

In 2000, the BBC described Get Carter as a relentlessly tough and uncompromising film that has grown more compelling with age. They also noted that Michael Caine’s performance as Jack Carter has become the standard for cool, thanks to his calm and ruthless depiction of a man driven by revenge.

Roger Ebert, the famous film critic, described Get Carter as a gripping and gritty crime film, noting that Michael Caine delivers a particularly commanding and natural performance.

So, they actually remade the movie in 2000 here in the US! It starred Sylvester Stallone, Alan Cumming, Mickey Rourke, and Rachael Leigh Cook. Interestingly, the original actor who played the main character showed up, but as a totally different role this time around.

It didn’t review very well, bombed at the box office and hasn’t gone on to be considered a classic.
