Michael is going platinum at the box office.
I was so excited to finally see the Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, and it definitely didn’t disappoint! It opened huge, making $97.2 million domestically – way more than any other movie about a musician ever has at the start. I know there’s been some talk about the film not addressing the serious allegations against Michael, but people seem to be sticking with it. It only dropped about 44% in its second weekend, which is a really good sign. It’s amazing to see Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s nephew, portray him so well!
Lionsgate reports that Michael is projected to finish its third weekend in theaters with a worldwide box office total of $570 million. Of that, $238.9 million came from theaters in the US and Canada, and $331.1 million from international markets. This makes Michael only the second music biopic to earn over $500 million globally (following Bohemian Rhapsody), and the highest-grossing music biopic ever in North America, surpassing Bohemian Rhapsody‘s previous record of $216.7 million.
