Michael Bolton reveals he has brain cancer glioblastoma and is facing ‘a reality of mortality’
Michael Bolton is battling glioblastoma, an aggressive and difficult-to-treat form of brain cancer which necessitated an emergency operation about sixteen months back.
Following the surgery where an entire brain tumor was extracted, the singer of “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You?” chose not to share specifics about the procedure. However, now he’s opening up about having a deeper gratitude for life and navigating this challenging circumstance positively.

Since his surgery in December 2023, followed by another operation the following month due to an infection, he’s been staying away from the spotlight. His chemotherapy and radiation treatments concluded last October, as he shared with the media. Instead of receiving a prognosis, he has decided not to seek one.
The 72-year-old expressed determination, saying they plan to continue their efforts and believe there’s still much work left in the struggle. They even came up with a title for a song: ‘I Won’t Back Down.’
Glioblastoma represents the most aggressive type of cancer affecting both the brain and spinal cord, as stated by the Glioblastoma Foundation. Following diagnosis, individuals who undergo treatment typically survive for about 15 months, while those without treatment live between three to six months on average, according to the foundation’s data. Although ongoing research into novel treatments offers hope, there is currently no cure for glioblastoma as per the Mayo Clinic. The condition is most frequently diagnosed in individuals during their mid-60s.

During the holiday season, Michael Bolton experienced a severe health issue as medical professionals detected a brain tumor necessitating immediate surgical intervention. For the time being, he will be stepping away from work to focus on recovery.
At his Connecticut residence, where he resides with his three daughters and six grandkids, he shared with People magazine that he’s come to understand the harshness of mortality.
All of a sudden, it dawned on me that there are unanswered questions,” Bolton stated. “One of them being, ‘Am I making the most effective use of my time?’
That recognition of his own mortality likely hit him around his initial emergency surgery.
In January 2024, Bolton expressed that it’s never easy for him to let down his fans or reschedule shows, but rest assured, he’s putting in extra effort to speed up his recovery and return to performing as soon as possible.
