Michael Barrymore stocks up on chocolate in a bizarre ‘munchies run’ clip after becoming a TikTok star

Michael Barrymore was incredibly popular in the early 2000s, but a tragic event at his house led him to withdraw from public life.

Recently, the comedian has gained popularity with a younger audience, becoming a surprising favorite among Gen Z thanks to a large and growing TikTok following.

Okay, so Michael just shared the most relatable – and funny – thing! He posted a quick video of his weekly trip to Lidl for sweets. It’s basically his ‘munchies run,’ and honestly, who doesn’t have one of those?

Michael shared on TikTok last month that he’d switched to shopping at Lidl after some fans criticized him for spending over £100 on snacks.

Michael was delighted with the £40 chocolate basket he received, and happily returned to his London home where his dog was waiting to greet him.

In a surprising move, Michael concluded the video by saying he planned to start playing Fortnite, smoke marijuana, and then fully immerse himself in the game.

Making videos of himself buying snacks – often called ‘munchie runs’ – is a familiar type of content for the former TV personality. He’s recently filmed these shopping trips at stores like Marks and Spencer, Aldi, and a pricey American candy shop named Candy Logo.

He started quietly building his TikTok presence in 2022 by sharing videos from his past television appearances, like clips from ‘Kids Say The Funniest Things’. Over time, his content has changed and now appeals to a much wider audience, making him popular again.

His fans see him as not just Uncle Michael (or even Grandpa Michael), but as one of their own.

He regularly shares videos with his followers, documenting everything from his thoughts and activities to his outfits (which are often just hoodies) and meals. He believes even the smallest details of his life are worth sharing.

He considers creating content for TikTok, which his followers enjoy as positive and uplifting, to be a full-time commitment. His restaurant reviews are particularly popular. Outside of trying new foods, he likes to go on ‘colour walks’ – essentially a scavenger hunt to spot different colors in the world around him.

Last year, a TikTok trend took off where people used video editing to create the illusion of inflating like balloons.

If you’re new to TikTok, exploring his profile feels like entering a completely different world. He’s incredibly popular there – people adore and almost worship him, and this happens constantly, not just occasionally.

When Michael announced in 2024 that he was leaving the UK for Spain, his fans were prepared for an adventure. But just six weeks later, he was incredibly homesick and close to tears in his car.

People quickly showed their support, urging him to return home. One fan even offered him a spare room, a kind gesture similar to what someone might do for a stranger facing homelessness – though it seemed unnecessary considering he was in his expensive £75,000 Porsche Macan.

Michael, a popular TikTok creator, claims people have stopped watching traditional TV, and his videos often appear to be a direct challenge to established media outlets.

A member of his team highlighted that his videos reach a massive audience – sometimes 10 million viewers, and often exceeding 20 million – far surpassing the viewership of popular Saturday night programs on channels like ITV and BBC1.

Michael’s colleagues have noticed he’s been following the comeback attempts of former TV star Noel Edmonds, who is currently filming his own reality show.

Michael used to live a very extravagant life, with a huge mansion and reports of owning fourteen cars. However, he claims he doesn’t long for those days and is happy with how things are now.

Dave’s company, Made by Dave Limited, hasn’t been active since 2021. At that time, it had debts totaling £29,000.

Michael Parker is the only director of the company, but hasn’t submitted any required filings since April 2024.

He’s lived in a two-bedroom flat in Acton, West London, since 2009, having purchased it for £360,000. He listed it for sale in autumn 2024 for £600,000, but recently reduced the price by £125,000 because it hasn’t sold yet.

Despite reports of a new relationship – photos surfaced of him with a younger man in Barcelona – his move to Spain didn’t go as planned. A TikTok video from December showed him appearing deeply upset.

He now has a whippet puppy named Lara, who he and his followers adore. However, this video reveals the difficulties he continues to face.

He confessed to Lara that he was really struggling. He felt incredibly homesick and insecure, and was frustrated with his tendency to dwell on self-pity, despite hating it. He admitted he’d been feeling this way for a long time and was exhausted, unsure how much more he could handle. He was surprised he hadn’t completely broken down, and ended with a self-deprecating insult.

Within days, Michael had returned to London.

He doesn’t have much space in his apartment, but he still proudly displays some of the awards he won during his time as a popular television personality in a tidy cabinet.

He often posts TikTok videos of himself being enthusiastically greeted by crowds, much like he experienced in the past.
