Michael B. Jordan’s Tom Clancy Thriller Soars on Hulu After Streaming Shake-Up

Despite receiving mixed reviews when it initially aired, Michael B. Jordan and Taylor Sheridan’s adaptation of a Tom Clancy thriller is currently experiencing a resurgence in popularity on streaming platforms. Although he has been acting since his youth, Jordan gained widespread recognition through the successes of “Chronicle” and “Fruitvale Station,” marking the beginning of his long-standing collaboration with Ryan Coogler that includes “Creed,” “Black Panther,” and “Sinners.” Meanwhile, Sheridan has risen to prominence in the television industry thanks to his “Yellowstone” universe, which has since expanded to include shows like “Tulsa King,” “Lioness,” and “Landman.

Clancy, renowned for his contributions to the spy fiction genre, is best known for introducing the character of Jack Ryan. He has penned 14 novels centered around this CIA agent. Beginning with “The Hunt for Red October” in 1990, several stories from the “Ryanverse” have been translated to film adaptations. These include “Patriot Games” and “Clear and Present Danger,” both starring Harrison Ford, as well as “The Sum of All Fears,” featuring Ben Affleck, “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” with Chris Pine, and John Krasinski’s Prime Video series. Among these adaptations, one focuses on a story not directly related to the Jack Ryan character.

Without Remorse Is Enjoying Success On Hulu

The Movie Was Previously A Prime Video Original

The latest movie based on a Tom Clancy novel was “Without Remorse,” which originally hit theaters as a 1993 spy thriller. This film delved into the backstory of recurring character John Kelly, more commonly known as John Clark. Starring Michael B. Jordan, this movie follows Kelly and his fellow US Navy SEALs as they’re pursued by Russian assassins, leading to the death of his pregnant wife and setting him on a path for revenge. Co-written by Taylor Sheridan and Will Staples, “Without Remorse” received mixed reviews from critics and debuted on Amazon Prime Video in April 2021 following its distribution by Paramount Pictures.

Currently, “Without Remorse” is surging in popularity on Hulu, having recently moved to the platform. As of now, it ranks 13th on their Top 15 Movies Today list, just above “The Contract,” featuring Morgan Freeman and John Cusack at 14th place, and “Shark Tale” led by Will Smith at 15th.

The rest of Hulu’s Top 15 list features a blend of fresh arrivals and well-known favorites. The top spot goes to “The Wolf of Wall Street,” followed by “The Order” starring Jude Law at number two, “A Complete Unknown” with Timothée Chalamet in third place, “Superbad” in fourth position, and “The Da Vinci Code” holding the fifth rank. The rest of the chart includes “Year One” featuring Jack Black at number six, “Garfield: The Movie” starring Bill Murray at number seven, “Anora” at number eight, “The Tomorrow War” at number nine, Jonah Hill’s “True Story” taking the tenth spot, “Angels & Demons” at eleventh place, and the original “Jurassic Park” rounds out the list in twelfth position.

Our Take On Without Remorse’s Renewed Streaming Success

Jordan Having A New Release Helps Put It Back On The Map

After several years since the release of “Without Remorse”, it might be unexpected to see the film regaining popularity on streaming platforms. One possible explanation for its renewed success could be that Tom Clancy’s return, following the release of “Sinners”, has put him back in the spotlight. The recent collaboration between Jordan and Coogler on “Sinners” has garnered them some of the best reviews of their careers, with a near-perfect 98% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. This positive reception might be encouraging viewers to revisit Jordan’s previous works, including “Without Remorse”.

Another possible explanation is that the conclusion of Reacher season 3 has sparked interest in the so-called “dad genre”, to which many Clancy adaptations belong. Since Without Remorse was meant to initiate a franchise, potentially followed by a Rainbow Six sequel film featuring Jordan’s character, the resurgence of its success suggests a promising future for the franchise, though it may be a while before it starts production now that Chad Stahelski’s Highlander reboot has found a new studio.
