Michael B. Jordan Eyeing Lead Role in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Director’s Big-Screen Remake of Hit ’80s Crime Series

Michael B. Jordan is potentially starring in the new version of an unnamed project. He’s had a fantastic year, notably playing both Smoke and Stack in the popular horror-drama Sinners. Many consider Jordan to be one of the best actors of his generation, and his performance in Sinners could finally lead to an Academy Award nomination – and perhaps even a win.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Michael B. Jordan is in early talks to play Ricardo Tubbs in a new Miami Vice movie directed by Joseph Kosinski. The role was famously played by Phillip Michael Thomas in the original TV series and Jamie Foxx in the 2006 film. This new movie will be set in the 1980s, just like the original series. Neither Jordan nor Universal Pictures has confirmed the reports so far.

The 2006 Miami Vice movie received a lot of mixed reactions from both viewers and critics. Many found the story weak and felt the chemistry between the actors didn’t match the popular TV show.

Michael B. Jordan is Looking to Have a Big 2027

Michael B. Jordan has been connected to a potential Miami Vice project before. Back in September 2025, he and Glenn Powell were both considered as frontrunners for leading roles. Powell was up for the part of James Crockett, a character previously played by Don Johnson in the original 1980s show and Colin Farrell in the 2006 movie. Now that Jordan is officially in discussions, it seems likely that Powell could join him as a co-star.

Michael B. Jordan has a packed 2027 ahead of him! He’s directing and starring in a remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, scheduled for release on March 5th, a project he’s been working on since 2016. He’s also slated to release Miami Vice on August 6th. While there’s talk of many familiar faces returning for the 2027 Avengers: Secret Wars movie, it’s unlikely we’ll see Jordan reprise his role as the Human Torch.

Although Universal Pictures hasn’t had much success adapting older TV shows like The A-Team and The Fall Guy into big movie franchises, Miami Vice is looking promising. With the director of Top Gun: Maverick and F1: The Movie at the helm, and starring actors from Sinners and Black Panther, plus a potential co-star from Twisters, the film has a strong cast and crew. This exciting combination could attract a new audience who didn’t grow up with the original Miami Vice series.
