Mia Goth’s “thrill-ride” psychological horror with a “mind-bending” plot is on TV tonight

Even though Halloween has passed, Film4 is still offering some thrilling sci-fi horror tonight. They’re showing the 2023 film Infinity Pool at 11:35pm.

The movie features Mia Goth, known for her role in MaXXXine, Alexander Skarsgård from Succession, and Cleopatra Coleman of Black Rabbit. It’s directed by Brandon Cronenberg, son of David Cronenberg.

The story centers on a couple vacationing at a remote island resort in a made-up country. While there, they become friends with another couple.

Despite being warned to stay within the resort, they ventured into the surrounding wilderness. This led to a terrible event and the unsettling discovery of a bizarre and unusual way the country punishes tourists.

We won’t give anything away, but that’s where the science fiction element comes in.

The film is highly rated on Rotten Tomatoes, earning an 87% positive score based on 237 critic reviews. Empire magazine described it as a “slick, satirical, insane thrill-ride.”

According to iNews, the film Infinity Pool is a provocative and unsettling experience, blending sharp social critique with bizarre, hallucinatory imagery and elements of science fiction horror. The review describes it as a commentary on wealth and its corrupting influence, calling it “Hitchcock on acid.”

The Financial Times praised the film as excellent, comparing it favorably to the work of David Cronenberg at his peak. However, they also noted that director Brandon Cronenberg has a distinct visual style – particularly evident in the cinematography by Karim Hussain, who uses striking wide-angle lenses – resulting in a powerfully bleak and pessimistic film.

According to The Guardian, Mia Goth delivered a fantastic performance. The film explores some disturbing and interesting themes, but the publication thought it became overly sensational and lost its way in the later parts.

David Cronenberg is currently developing a large-scale science fiction film titled Dragon, which has recently restarted production after being delayed for several years.

Okay, so the story’s about these guys who hunt down alien creatures way out in space. But it’s not for sport – they’re after something they can turn into hallucinogenic drugs. Pretty dark, right?

You can watch Infinity Pool tonight on Film4 at 11:35 PM, and it will likely be available to stream on Channel 4 afterward.

The latest issue of Living Legends is now available! You can find Ariana & Witches at newsstands and online for only £8.99.
