MF DOOM’s Estate and Egon Alapatt Resolve Dispute Over Late Artist’s Notebooks

The legal disagreement between MF DOOM’s estate and Eothen “Egon” Alapatt, a former manager at the Stones Throw label who was also a business partner of the late artist, regarding DOOM’s notebooks is now resolved.

The specifics of the agreement are kept private, but it’s been officially declared that the disagreement was peacefully settled. Jasmine Thompson, DOOM’s widow, expressed in a statement, “We’re glad to put an end to this chapter. Throughout the years, various stories about this issue have circulated, some of which were distorted or exaggerated.

She added, “Disagreements occurred throughout the process, but we recognize that Egon safeguarded DOOM’s priceless notebooks, and we are delighted to receive them back as part of this settlement. As a family, our aim is unwavering: to commemorate DOOM’s exceptional legacy—his unique genius in music and culture. We pray that this agreement propels us further in honoring his memory.

Alapatt expressed that DOOM was not only a cherished friend but also one of the most influential artists he had ever encountered. For years, he safeguarded DOOM’s notebooks, as they held a crucial role in preserving the enduring musical legacy of this exceptional talent. His primary objective has always been to highlight DOOM’s remarkable musical genius, and the agreement Jasmine and he reached concerning DOOM’s notebooks is a significant victory in safeguarding the origins of an extraordinary artistic journey. Alapatt takes great pride in having contributed to the preservation of some valuable relics from DOOM’s musical life and entrusts Jasmine to decide the next moves for the notebooks.

In October 2023, Thompson filed a lawsuit against the executive, accusing him of taking approximately 30 notebooks belonging to DOOM. These notebooks were reportedly filled with handwritten lyrics for songs from albums like “Operation: Doomsday” (1999), “Madvillainy” (2004), and “MM…FOOD” (2004). Additionally, they contained other creative concepts attributed to DOOM.
