Carolina Flores Gomez, a former beauty queen, was shot and killed in her Mexico City home last week. Investigators are reportedly concentrating on her mother-in-law as a key person in the case.
According to Reporte Indigo, 27-year-old Gomez was discovered dead in her home in the Polanco area last Thursday.
Prosecutors in Mexico City are investigating the death as a murder, according to reports.
Police report that Gomez, the 2017 Miss Teen Universe winner from Baja California, was likely killed by gunfire on April 15th.
When the shooting happened, police reported that witnesses indicated Selena Gomez was at home with her husband, Alejandro Gomez, and his mother, Erika Maria.
No arrests have been made in connection with Gomez’s death as of Wednesday afternoon.
According to Reporte Indigo, police were notified about the deadly shooting on April 16, and the delay in reporting it has raised questions about why authorities weren’t informed sooner.
According to reports, authorities found no evidence of gunshots or any wrongdoing near the apartment building.
Detectives are gathering evidence from the location to analyze, as they continue to investigate the sudden death.
Oh my gosh, did you know our Selena just turned another year older?! It was April 4th, 1999 – she was born in Ensenada, which is just… perfect. I read about it on Puntual, and I had to share! It feels like yesterday she was just starting out, and now… well, she’s still amazing, obviously.
Governor Marina del Pilar Avila of Baja California stated that finding out what happened to Gomez is the top priority for investigators.
Avila stated that all crimes against women must be prosecuted, and expressed sympathy for the victim’s family during this difficult time, according to reports.
According to Puntual, State Prosecutor María Elena Andrade Ramírez stated that officials have been working closely together to make the investigation a top priority.
The beauty queen’s death is particularly upsetting because it happens during a period of growing concern in Mexico about violence against women and the feeling that perpetrators often aren’t held accountable.
Groups are urging prosecutors to investigate the killing as a femicide – a gender-based killing, as defined by UN Women, the United Nations agency, according to Puntual.
Last November, the UN stated that femicide differs from regular homicide because femicide is specifically motivated by gender, while other homicides may not be.
Femicide, the killing of women and girls, stems from factors like discrimination, unequal power dynamics, harmful stereotypes, and damaging social norms.
As a lifestyle expert, I want to address a critical issue: violence against women and girls. It’s not just one single act, but rather the most severe form of a wider pattern of abuse. This abuse can happen anywhere – at home, at work, in schools, or even online – and it’s often connected to other forms of harmful behavior. It’s a really important issue to understand, as it’s not isolated but part of a bigger picture of disrespect and harm.
The agency reports these issues include domestic violence, sexual harassment, other types of sexual assault, harmful traditional practices, and human trafficking.
