Lola Young, a singer-songwriter from the UK, is sharing the difficult moment that led her to begin her journey toward getting better.
The singer behind the hit “Messy” recently told Rolling Stone she’s actually thankful she fainted on stage last year. She described the frightening experience as a turning point that helped her improve for herself, her fans, and her future. She explained it was a moment where she realized she needed to make changes.
During a performance at the All Things Go Music Festival in New York City in September, the Grammy-winning singer collapsed on stage. A video of the incident quickly spread online, showing her stumbling, dropping her microphone, and falling backwards, causing concern among fans. As a result, she canceled the rest of her 21-city North American tour.
Originally, the tour for her third album, “I’m Only F— Myself,” was scheduled to finish with shows at the Hollywood Palladium in December. However, she ended up spending two months in a treatment facility focusing on mental health and therapy to address addiction. She is now continuing her recovery by attending support groups and working with a sponsor.
Young announced on social media that she needed to cancel upcoming shows to focus on her health. She explained she would be taking a break and apologized to her fans, saying she values her work and doesn’t take their support for granted. She hopes they’ll understand and give her another chance after she’s had time to recover and return feeling better.
Young explained to Rolling Stone that she understood why some people were upset about her tour cancellation. She said it was a difficult but necessary decision, and that continuing would have been a matter of life or death due to her struggles with addiction. She asked, ‘What else was I going to do?’ emphasizing the severity of her situation.
This wasn’t the first time Young, the singer behind the hit song “Messy,” had a health scare. During her performance at the Coachella festival in 2025, she started to struggle with the intense heat, which was around 100 degrees. While singing and dancing, she began to feel sick and had to leave the stage quickly, requesting a bucket.
The celebrated artist has openly discussed her battles with cocaine and alcohol, and frequently incorporates these experiences into her songwriting. In her song “d£aler,” which is a farewell to her drug dealer, she describes a difficult day trying to stay sober, admitting she still feels unhappy. The lyrics reveal her desire to escape, saying, “I wanna get away, far from here / Pack my bags, my drugs, and disappear,” and also include a line about telling her dealer she’ll miss him.
In a recent interview with The Times UK, Young shared that she’s been working through recovery from drug addiction. She didn’t want to go into detail, but emphasized that recovery is a continuous journey. ‘I’m still a work in progress,’ she said, ‘but I’m doing much better now.’
