Meryl Streep and Martin Short Go Bananas Racing Through NYC on Set

On Wednesday, while filming scenes for Only Murders in the Building, Meryl Streep and Martin Short appeared as though enamored, youthful teenagers in love.

In early 2024, the leading actors from the popular Hulu series, who play the characters Loretta Durkin and Oliver Putman (the lovebirds), ignited speculation about a real-life romance as they were often seen together on multiple occasions.

At a public appearance for their shared project last August, the Academy Award-winning actress and former Saturday Night Live cast member, both aged 75, were spotted holding hands.

According to Page Six, it’s been more than a year since this couple has been secretly together. A source mentioned that their relationship unexpectedly blossomed.

At that point, the source inside asserted that neither of them were involved in a romantic relationship – yet, their interaction soon developed into something more romantic.

Currently, life is being reflected in art, as the pair was observed capturing a playful moment while dashing along a New York city sidewalk, with Oliver brandishing a banana aloft, all for Season 5.

Under a large trench coat, a fedora, and dark shades, Meryl appeared as if she were an undercover detective – fully immersed in her role and undoubtedly planning something secretive.

As a lifestyle aficionado, I found myself captivated by the enigmatic air surrounding the Oscar-winning figure, hinting at the tantalizing possibility of an intriguing new lead just beyond reach – much like Loretta Durkin on the hunt for a scrumptious morsel of information.

In a similarly energetic display, Oliver Putnam donned an extravagant coat over a regal blue suit, and, just as she did, he held a banana as if it were a confidential prop.

Regardless of their lengthy careers in the entertainment industry, the pair exhibited no hints of lessening their pace, instead sprinting swiftly across the urban landscape.

Once upon a time, I found myself effortlessly surging forward, Meryl at my heels. Meanwhile, Martin, in a comical attempt to match my pace, struggled to catch up, his efforts both valiant and amusing.

The fun dynamic between them seems to be fanning the flames of speculation that their off-screen relationship could be more than just friendship, feeding into the ongoing gossip about these popular on-screen partners.

Following a charming series of photos shared by Selena Gomez, co-star of Only Murders in the Building alongside Steve Martin, who is 79 years old, the set for the show reportedly begins next.

From the year 2021 onwards, this threesome plays eccentric neighbors living in an upscale New York apartment complex. They embark on a genuine crime podcast journey, only to unwittingly become embroiled in a series of mysterious killings.

The highly praised Hulu show boasts a critical approval, a loyal viewer base, and an ever-changing roster of top-tier guest performers, including Meryl Streep.

Currently, with the commencement of season 5, Selena celebrated this significant step by sharing some playful photos and her distinctive humor.

In the images, Martin and Short can be spotted acting foolishly inside a vehicle. Meanwhile, Selena is situated in the front seat, expressively rolling her eyes at their shenanigans.

‘5 years and counting with these knuckle heads @onlymurdershulu,’ she captioned the three photos.

In August, when Meryl Streep and Jim Broadbent were spotted holding hands, I, their devoted admirer, couldn’t help but wonder. When a spokesperson confirmed they were merely friends, my heart skipped a beat, hoping for a romantic connection between the two stars I adore. But, alas, I remain an eager spectator, waiting for any signs of a blossoming relationship from these silver screen icons.

However, insiders later disclosed to DailyMail.com that a romance did blossom on set of OMITB.

‘Meryl and Martin denied their romantic involvement months ago,’ the insider noted.

It was noted that their poor performance is an open fact across the whole project. People seem content with not asking them questions as their work appears self-explanatory.

Romance rumors began not long after Meryl’s separation from husband Don Gummer was revealed. 

They got married in 1978 and have four children: Henry (age 45), Mamie (41), Grace (38), and Louisa Jacobson (33). However, they announced their separation in October 2017, with the news being made public in October 2023.

For over six years now, Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been living separate lives, but their affection for one another remains unchanged. They’ve decided to lead independent paths.

Short, meanwhile, lost his wife Nancy Dolman to cancer in 2010 after three decades of marriage.   

They have three children together – Katherine, 41, Oliver, 38, and Henry, 35. 

Martin previously told AARP that she’s still with him and their three children ‘all the time.’

‘Our marriage was a triumph,’ he told the publication in 2019. ‘So it’s tough.’

In 2010, she passed away, yet I continue to converse as if she were here, just like the Father of the Bride character portrayed,” the actor explained.

Martin clarified, “It’s more like, ‘Hey, Grandma,’ isn’t it? I’m wondering what her reaction might be to this choice or that, particularly concerning our three grandkids.

After Nancy’s demise, Martin expressed that he had never been among those individuals who viewed it as an ending.

Short expressed the viewpoint that when someone passes away, they do not simply disappear from our lives but rather become more present in those who loved them. He finds it incorrect to suggest that life ends without mentioning or speaking about them.

Adding: ‘That’s based on denial that we’re all going to die. So to me, she’s still here.’
