Merrick Watts rushed to hospital after suffering a SHOCKING running injury: ‘That’s more than a Band-Aid’

2026 certainly got off to a less-than-stellar start for funnyman Merrick Watts.

The former radio host, 52, took to Instagram on New Year’s Day to reveal a shocking running injury.

Merrick was organizing a fun run in Maroubra, a suburb in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, when a serious problem occurred.

He took to Instagram to document the nightmare ordeal which saw him rushed to hospital.

Merrick began his revealing and graphic clip with a trigger warning.

‘I just got back from the Rando Run which did not go according to plan,’ he began.

I actually had to go to the emergency room and needed surgery right away. Just a warning: the rest of this video might be graphic, so don’t watch if you’re sensitive to that kind of thing.

The video then showed a highly energetic Merrick leading a group of people on a run, with a caption warning of imminent danger: ‘Seconds from disaster.’

The filming session stopped abruptly when Merrick tripped and fell while capturing footage of the runners.

That was a good beginning. So, what exactly happened here? It looks like someone was recording a video and tripped on the step,” he explained.

Merrick then panned the camera down to his knee, revealing a deep, bloody gash. 

‘Warning that is a f***ing deep cut,’ he said through the pain.

That cut looks serious and will need stitches. You boys go ahead and run to the hospital, and I expect to see you there with flowers and chocolates later.

Merrick’s wife, Georgie, drove him to the hospital after the accident, jokingly saying it was exactly the kind of thing he’d do.

He then showed another confronting scene of him lying on a hospital bed with his wound exposed.

A nurse asked Merrick to bend his knee and he declared: ‘I reckon that’s more than a Band-Aid.’

Despite needing stitches, Merrick seemed completely calm and collected, even leaving a tip for the staff at Maroubra Urgent Care.

Oh my god, he said he felt like running again! Like, actually asked if he should! And the nurse, bless her, just straight up told him, ‘Please don’t do that.’ It was amazing and terrifying all at once. He’s just…so determined, even when everyone is telling him not to! I can’t even breathe thinking about it!

He then asked for ketamine, but his request was immediately denied.

Merrick recently remembered a surprising incident from his time co-hosting at Nova, when he and Tim Ross accidentally cost the network a million dollars.

Oh my god, you will NOT believe this story! So, I was listening to the Friendlyjordies Podcast, and apparently, back when they were starting out, our guys – you know, the absolute legends, Mark and Rosso – were asked to do a live ad for McDonald’s El Maco range! Can you even imagine?! But it totally flopped! Apparently, it didn’t go at all how anyone planned. I’m dying to know all the details, honestly!

The radio hosts made a joke about the food selection being incredibly bland shortly after it was presented, which their supervisors didn’t appreciate.

Merrick explained, ‘We call that the El Maco incident, but it’s something no one ever talks about – though Rosso and I both remember it.’

We really offended the other team. One part of what I said was about how McDonald’s food is consistently tasteless, and I was being silly and laughing while I said it. I regret it now.

Oh my gosh, and then I had to bring up the shaker fries again! I just couldn’t help myself. It was right after we went off the air, and honestly, it was a disaster. I’m pretty sure my little obsession cost them a million dollars! I feel terrible… but also, the shaker fries are amazing.

Merrick and Rosso were famous for their radio programs on stations like Triple J, Nova, and Triple M. After working together for more than ten years, the comedic pair surprised their fans when they decided to split up in 2009.
