“Memorable” fantasy drama with Toby Jones lands new UK streaming home

The popular fantasy series Tale of Tales, featuring Toby Jones and Salma Hayek, is now available to stream in the UK. Known for its impressive cast and vibrant visuals, it’s a great choice for anyone who enjoys fairy tales.

Directed and co-written by Matteo Garrone, the film draws inspiration from the works of Italian poet Giambattista Basile. It’s presented in three parts: ‘The Enchanted Doe’, ‘The Flayed Old Lady’, and ‘The Flea’.

I’ve been diving into these stories, and they’re wild! There’s one about a king who has to take down a massive sea monster, another where a player king—a real ladies’ man—gets a shock from these two mysterious sisters, and honestly, the weirdest one is about a king who actually keeps a giant flea as a pet! It’s a pretty bizarre mix, but I’m hooked.

The fantasy drama boasts a fantastic supporting cast with stars like John C. Reilly, Vincent Cassel, and Shirley Henderson. You can now watch it on Prime Video in the UK, and new subscribers can enjoy a 30-day free trial.

When Tale of Tales came out in theaters in 2015, critics loved it, giving it an 84% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 105 reviews. Viewers, however, rated it a bit lower, with a score of 56%.

I recently checked out Tale of Tales, and honestly, it’s stunning. The Independent said it felt like a movie by Fellini – super artistic and visually amazing, with really smooth camera movements. And San Diego Reader went even further, calling it totally captivating, unforgettable, and just… haunting. It really stuck with me after I finished playing.

Although the Los Angeles Times found the film energetic and darkly humorous, they felt it ultimately didn’t come to life, writing that the director’s lively approach was surprisingly ineffective.

Prime Video recently added this fantasy drama, along with other titles like the stylish crime thriller Crime 101 and the intriguing mystery drama The Falling.
