Memes flow as Duo, the Duolingo owl, becomes the hottest topic upon death
In an unexpected twist, Duolingo revealed that their beloved owl mascot has passed away – sparking reactions across the web.
Most people who’ve endeavored to learn a new language are familiar with Duolingo. This educational app and online platform, introduced in 2012, has made significant strides since its inception. At first limited to languages, Duolingo now includes sections for music, mathematics, and an unexpectedly competitive ranked system as well.
As a devoted admirer, I must acknowledge that one of the most iconic logos and mascots globally is none other than Duo – the vibrant green owl symbolizing the application. Yet, astonishingly, it appears that our beloved Duo has met its end.
Duolingo’s mascot is dead
On February 11th, via X, Duolingo posted a statement saying Duo (the owl mascot) is no longer alive. Despite appearing sarcastic, this announcement has sparked a lot of discussion online. Here’s how it was worded: “Duo the owl has passed away.
It is with heavy hearts that we inform you that Duo, formally known as The Duolingo Owl, is dead.
Currently, the authorities are looking into the circumstances surrounding his passing, and we are providing them with all necessary assistance. However, as far as we currently understand, it seems he might have passed away while awaiting your lesson completion; nonetheless, this is speculative at best.
As a gamer, I’d like to remind everyone that while we know he had his fair share of adversaries, let’s keep the comments section positive and respectful. If you feel compelled to share your feelings, I’d appreciate it if you could also include your credit card information so we can subscribe you automatically to Duolingo Max in his honor.
We appreciate you respecting Dua Lipa’s privacy at this time.”

It’s apparent that the post carries a playful tone, yet it hasn’t deterred countless individuals from expressing their condolences, albeit unconventionally. Notable gaming social media platforms have joined in to bid farewell, while some chose to add insult to injury. In essence, it appears everyone is finding joy in this situation.
Below is a little taste of some of our favorite replies to the post:
This post discusses some of the various tributes that have been given to a menacing green owl, which is said to have caused us trouble for not attending a class. However, it seems that no one quite knows what this refers to. It could be a new marketing strategy from Duolingo or simply some playful content shared by their social media team. For the moment, we’re all having fun speculating and engaging with the comments, particularly those connected to Dua Lipa.
