Members of gospel group the Nelons are killed in plane crash

As a long-time fan and follower of gospel music, I was deeply saddened to hear about the tragic plane crash that took the lives of three beloved members of the Nelons family band, Kelly Nelon Clark, Jason Clark, and Amber Nelon Kistler, along with their assistant Melodi Hodges, pilot Larry Haynie, and his wife Melissa. The news hit me hard, not just because of the loss of such talented individuals, but also because of the rich history and impact the Nelons have had on the gospel music industry.

Three members of the Atlanta family-band gospel group the Nelons have died in a plane crash.

On Friday, a plane carrying members of the Nelons band, including Kelly Nelon Clark, Jason Clark, Amber Nelon Kistler, Nathan Kistler, Melodi Hodges (assistant), Larry Haynie (pilot), and his wife Melissa, tragically crashed near Gillette, Wyo. Sadly, all passengers and the pilot lost their lives in this unfortunate incident. Gaither Management Group confirmed this devastating news regarding the Gaither Homecoming Cruise in Alaska.

I have been deeply saddened to learn about the tragic plane crash that took the lives of my grandparents, Jason and Kelly Nelon Clark, my aunt Amber, her husband Nathan, as well as dear family friends Melodi Hodges, Larry and Melissa Haynie. This news has left me in shock and grief, as I’m sure it has for many of you.

According to Keith Holloway, who spoke with USA Today on behalf of the National Transportation Safety Board, the investigation is still in its initial stages and there isn’t much detail to share yet.

“The plane is tucked away at an isolated site. After gaining entry, they’ll record the area and inspect the aircraft. Subsequently, the plane will be transported to a protected location for detailed analysis.”

The Nelons boast an impressive gospel legacy, dating back to the late ’70s. Originally established by Rex Nelon, this musical collective has evolved throughout the decades, welcoming new members while maintaining its distinctive sound. They’ve produced numerous albums and have been recognized with multiple Grammy nominations and Dove Awards. In 2016, they were honored with induction into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame.
