The popular horror actress has landed another role in a new scary movie, and genre fans will be excited. Known for her work in films like Scream, Abigail, and In the Heights, she’s quickly becoming a major star in Hollywood. This new project will give her the chance to collaborate with both up-and-coming actors and established stars like Courteney Cox and Neve Campbell.
According to Deadline, Ana de Armas Barrera is now part of the cast of the upcoming maritime horror film, Black Tides, and will star alongside John Travolta. The film, directed by Renny Harlin (known for Cliffhanger and Die Hard 2), centers on a father (Travolta) attempting to rebuild his relationship with his daughter (Barrera) and grandson during a sailing trip. Their journey turns into a desperate fight for survival when they are attacked by a pod of orcas.
I’m really excited about this movie! They’re filming it right now in Gran Canaria, Spain, and the director, Harlin, has been saying amazing things about the two leads. He says Melissa George is absolutely nailing the role – bringing both a fierce energy and a real emotional depth, which is exactly what the part needs. And apparently, the chemistry between her and John Corbett is incredible – he thinks they’re a perfect match and really bring the story to life. Sounds like movie magic to me!
Joining John Travolta in the film Black Tides will be his daughter, Ella Bleu Travolta, alongside actors Álvaro Mel and Dylan Torrell. The screenplay is by Chris Sparling, known for Greenland, and Ángel Agudo, who worked on Apocalypse Z. Adrián Guerra and Nuria Valls are producing the movie through their company, Nostromo Pictures, which also made Buried and Bird Box Barcelona.
The story of Black Tides feels like it shares similarities with Blake Lively’s 2016 film The Shallows, and other suspenseful movies where people are threatened by dangerous sharks or whales and must use their wits to survive. Hopefully, Black Tides will explore the conflict between humans and nature in a meaningful way and become a standout film in Barrera’s career.
Beyond the recent Scream movies, Jenna Ortega’s standout roles include Abigail, a unique take on vampires that follows mercenaries battling a child vampire. If you enjoyed that inventive approach, keep an eye out for Black Tides, which promises to be a thrilling and original survival horror film with monstrous creatures.
Viewers might also realize that because Barrera often plays a “final girl,” her character is very likely to survive the events of Black Tides. As Melissa Barrera‘s career progresses, she has the potential to star in some truly impactful modern horror films. While this whale-focused adventure might not be one of those films, it does give her a strong leading role.
