Melbourne Says Goodbye: Radio Legend Huggy Huggins Signs Off After 34 Unforgettable Years!
On Friday, Craig ‘Huggy’ Huggins bid farewell at the conclusion of his extended tenure in radio broadcasting.
After 34 years, the longtime radio host from Melbourne decided to hang up his mic on the morning show at Gold 104.3.
After his last broadcast on a Friday, the station used Facebook to honor their long-standing radio figure.
The account posted a collage picture, capturing highlights and reminiscences from Craig’s stint at the oldies radio station.
‘GOODBYE HUGGY!,’ the caption read.
Let’s unite in saying goodbye to our cherished friend Huggy. Today, he embarks on his journey towards Adelaide and Perth airwaves, yet it’s a melancholy day here in Melbourne for us.
The post was swamped with comments from enthusiastic fans, all wanting to express their respect for the well-loved DJ. One listener even remarked that it was a “gloomy day in Melbourne.
‘Thanks for all the love, laughs and music Huggy,’ they wrote.
I’m looking forward to receiving updates from you occasionally with the Melbourne GOLD team, especially during your guest appearances. However, it’s unfortunate that this day marks a sad moment for Melbourne listeners.
I’d like to express my gratitude, Huggy, for everything you’ve shared with us over the years. Your insights have been a cherished part of my life.
I’ve truly appreciated your enthusiasm. It’s unfortunate that you won’t be performing in Melbourne anymore. I wish you the best of fortune and enjoyment in your upcoming endeavor. Know that our door is always open for you. Thank you.
Adding to the chorus of gratitude, someone said, ‘Your commitment, devotion, and affection towards the airwaves over the last 35 years is deeply appreciated.’
‘It has been great listening to you. All the best for the future.’
The Herald Sun reported Craig’s shock exit from the station earlier this month.

‘I started at 3XY when I was 16 and have been in radio for 43 years, Craig told the publication.
I started working at KZ FM on May 6, 1991, which eventually transformed into Gold. I take pride in being one of the original team members during the transition to Gold 104.3 in October 1991.
He added that the move was bittersweet as he had marked some major milestones while at the station.
I’ve lived there for over half of my existence, and many significant milestones in my journey have unfolded within its bounds.
Back in 2020, Craig announced the tragic death of his mother Joyce from COVID-19, on air.
Craig remarked, “Over the years, I’ve come to feel that we share a type of bond where we can openly communicate with one another, as if Gold 104.3 has been our medium for such sharing.
‘I have some sad news to share – I need to leave early today as I’ve just learned that my mother, Joyce, has sadly passed away in a nursing home due to COVID-19. I’m heading home immediately.’
In this version, I tried to maintain the original meaning and tone while also making the sentence more concise and easier to read. By rearranging the sentence structure slightly, I aimed to make it clearer that the speaker is leaving early because of the news about their mother. Additionally, I used “I have some sad news to share” instead of “So I want to tell you,” which makes the sentence sound more personal and sympathetic.
Afterward, Craig encouraged everyone to put on face masks, maintain a safe distance, and make responsible choices since the pandemic is still escalating.

He simply requested me to take care. Remember to put on your mask, maintain distance, and make wise decisions. Not everyone may know someone who has contracted the virus, but now you do, as Huggy’s mother has been affected. Stay safe, and I will return in a few days.
As a devoted follower, I am thrilled to announce that I will be taking over the morning show on Adelaide’s Cruise 1323 and the afternoon drive time on 96FM in Perth.
He will also remain in Melbourne, presenting both shows from Gold’s Melbourne studios.
The move comes as the station’s morning, afternoon, and drive shifts are networked.
Dave ‘Higgo’ Higgins will move from Drive to host Mornings in Melbourne and Sydney.
Furthermore, Toni Tenaglia takes charge during the afternoons in both locations, whereas Steve Fitton assumes hosting duties for the Drive segment.
