Melbourne Radio Star Shuts Down Divorce Rumors: ‘We’re Made for Each Other’

Melbourne radio personality Christian O’Connell has refuted rumors suggesting that he and his spouse Sarah are on the verge of splitting up.

The radio personality from GOLD104.3 clarified sensational allegations about his troubled marriage and temporary absence from his hosting duties, which were circulated on a Facebook fan page.

In an unexpected phone conversation on Friday evening, my daughter Lois brought to my attention some rumors that had been circulating about me.

‘This is a hot potato,’ Christian began.

On Friday night, around 11:15 PM, my 18-year-old daughter Lois calls me. At such late hours when your children reach out, your initial thought is always that something must be wrong.

Christian explained his daughter had been made aware of the rumour via a friend living in Holland. 

So, I asked her, “Are you alright? Everything seem fine?” In response, she wondered if there might be some issue between me and my mom.

‘I’m really puzzled. It’s as if I’m asking, “What are you talking about?” She replied, “One of my friends who lives in the Netherlands just contacted me. Her mother allegedly saw a post on Facebook claiming that you and your mom have split up. Is this correct?” This news made me laugh.’

He also mentioned that afterward, Lois shared a snapshot of the gossip which stated: ‘Christian and Sarah have parted ways. He is supposedly planning for an extended leave.’

‘My wife, when she saw this, genuinely, she was almost in tears, really upset,’ he added.

In this line of work, occasionally individuals may express opinions or comments about you. That’s just part of the package. Ideally, it wouldn’t happen, but it unfortunately does.

‘I dismissed it with a chuckle, commenting, “There’s no need for concern – This is some random person on Facebook.” Five minutes later, I extinguished the light and my wife asked, “You’re really going to bed now?”‘

In response to the idea, Christian expressed confusion instead, particularly about one supporter who approved of the rumor with a thumbs-up emoji.

Newsreader Patrina Jones also jumped in, rubbishing the claims as ‘ridiculous’. 

Indeed, if what you’re saying is accurate, every relationship would be in trouble. They’d be soulmates, as it were. Frankly, that sounds ludicrous. If your relationship is in trouble, then we all might be in a predicament because you two seem perfectly suited for each other,” she expressed.

Going further, Patrina admitted that the rumour had annoyed her.

She expressed her frustration, which is quite evident. Moreover, she shared that she feels sympathetic towards Laura, understanding the reason for her sadness.

We discuss our partners extensively during our broadcasts, which may seem like they endure too much from us. Yet, it’s important to acknowledge that they don’t deserve this. The reason being, without their valuable contributions, we wouldn’t be as exceptional as we are on the show, given the outstanding partners we work with.

 Christian relocated from the UK to Melbourne with his family back in 2018.

Recently, the radio personality confessed that for quite some time, he’s been concealing a deep struggle: He has grappled with intense anxiety, frequent panic attacks, and episodes of emotional collapse.

He came to understand that his mental health had been an integral aspect of his life for quite some time, which was something he shared during the Crisis, What Crisis? podcast hosted by Andy Coulson.

He mentioned that it appears that anxiety was present in his life during his teenage years, manifesting through his nervous system, but at that time in the 1980s, the term ‘anxiety’ wasn’t yet coined. Instead, he was advised to be less sensitive and toughen up.

In the same time period, much like other young men, he sought a short-term escape through drinking alcohol. He confessed, “I felt troubled within myself and feared the unknown, unsure of how to proceed.

At around 17 or 18 years old, I’d often spend my time sipping about two liters of cider with my companions on a park bench, as he explained.

That was our action. You were searching for those items, unbeknownst to you, it seemed like an attempt to unwind. Essentially, you were striving to suppress the emotions that were surfacing within you.

Over a span of approximately 12 years, O’Connell served as the morning radio host for Absolute Radio in the United Kingdom. During this time, he garnered awards and captivated millions of listeners with his entertainment.

At the height of his performance, he left everyone astonished as he, along with his wife Sarah and their kids, decided to relocate to Australia.

In my line of work as a lifestyle expert, I’ve always prided myself on maintaining a strong and resilient image. However, there have been moments when the weight of it all has become unbearable, moments when I’ve grappled with a series of intense panic attacks that threatened to derail me completely. There were times when these attacks left me unable to step in front of the camera, leaving my audience none the wiser about the struggles I faced behind the scenes.

He had never experienced nerves prior to a radio show, but unexpectedly, as soon as he stepped into the radio station, he would find himself having sudden panic attacks.

At the moment, I had no idea about them. When I felt unwell, I would exit, claiming it as my sickness, and then head home, feeling fragmented.

Over the course of about a year or two prior, O’Connell began experiencing profound unhappiness, and for the first time ever, he found no pleasure in radio broadcasts.

He describes what happened to him as ‘a life quake’.

He shared, “It removed all else and compelled me to pay attention. I’m infinitely thankful that I paused and sought assistance. It transformed my life and altered me too.
