Considering its budget, that means Melania is looking at needing around $100 million at the box office to avoid being considered a flop. It’s a pretty high hurdle, honestly.
The film had a decent opening weekend, earning $8.1 million – the best opening for a documentary in five years. However, while a strong start for a documentary, that amount isn’t nearly enough for the film to reach the $100 million mark overall.
The movie is facing negative feedback from both audiences, like those on IMDb, and professional critics. This poor reception will likely hurt its long-term performance in theaters, and it’s expected to see a significant drop in ticket sales during its second weekend. Currently, it has a very low 10% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 20 reviews.
Despite generally positive reviews from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes – currently at 99% – the film likely won’t be a box office success. This audience approval mirrors what happened with the political film Reagan earlier this year, where audiences and critics had different opinions, but it probably won’t be enough to save Melania financially.
