Mel Gibson’s Passion Of The Christ Sequels: Triple The Budget, Epic Battles & 2027 Release

Mel Gibson is making a sequel to his 2004 film, The Passion of the Christ, and it will be released in two parts. The first film, titled The Resurrection of the Christ, will come out on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, and the second will be released on Ascension Day, May 6th. The new films will have a much larger budget – three times the amount of the original – due to their significant scope and development process.

The next installments in the series will feature new actors playing Jesus and Mary Magdalene. Jaakko Ohtonen and Mariela Garriga have taken over the roles previously held by Jim Caviezel and Monica Bellucci, and filming is currently happening in Rome, Italy.

Sources at Deadline report that each film in The Resurrection of the Christ series will cost around $100 million to make, bringing the total budget for the two movies to $200 million. This is unusual for an independent film and a considerable jump from the $30 million budget of The Passion of the Christ. In fact, it’s a much larger budget than any other film currently being offered at next month’s American Film Market.

The movie, directed by Mel Gibson, reportedly received a larger budget because the upcoming sequels will include large-scale battles between angels, demons, and other forces representing good and evil. This aligns with Gibson’s earlier statements about wanting to depict the story of the angels’ fall from grace.

Details about the plot are being kept secret – potential buyers aren’t even allowed to read the script yet. The story will likely pick up after the events of the 2004 film, continuing after the crucifixion of Christ.

The upcoming Resurrection of the Christ films promise to be bigger and more focused on religious myths than the first movie. Expect more action, including battles between angels and demons, and a significantly increased budget.

Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ sparked debate but became a huge financial hit, earning $610 million globally and $370 million in the US, despite costing only $30 million to make. While potential sequels have a much larger budget of $100 million each, and some are disappointed that Jim Caviezel isn’t reprising his role, most distributors are optimistic. One buyer even stated the film “sells itself” and is “gold” due to the strength of the source material.

Despite being kept under wraps and costing a lot to make, interest in both “The Resurrection of the Christ” films is incredibly high. They’re expected to be major successes when they come out in theaters in 2027.
