Meghan Markle’s Risky DIY Bath Salt Recipe Sparks Health Concerns

Last week turned out to be quite an uncomfortable one for Meghan Markle and her new Netflix project, and it wasn’t only due to the negative reviews about her attempting to present store-bought goods as homemade while cooking pasta with tomatoes in all-white attire.

Although some critics joke about the authenticity of the Duchess’ show, “With Love, Meghan,” others have raised more significant concerns over a DIY project that could be potentially harmful.

Herbalists and skincare experts are expressing concerns about the bath salt blend by Meghan Markle, as they worry it could potentially harm or even cause burns to the skin of those who use it.

Jennifer Christopherson, an experienced esthetician and YouTube content creator, cautioned against attempting something similar to Markle’s mixture in the safety of your home.

‘I don’t even know if she really knows what she’s doing,’ she said.

In the beginning of the eight-episode series that started streaming last week, Markle received a set of warnings during her initial DIY project featured in the premiere.

Inside her Montecito mansion, she arranges a welcoming basket for her friend, renowned makeup artist Daniel Martin – make sure not to confuse this with the Montecito farmhouse she frequently uses for filming purposes.

Instead of keeping the Trader Joe’s Peanut Butter Filled Pretzels in their factory packaging, she transfers them to a customized plastic bag that belongs to him, aiming to enhance his evening snack time enjoyment.

She also makes homemade candles with wax from honey bees she says she has raised herself.

In an already awkward situation – with the segments and Meghan Markle’s preference for the surname Sussex being uncomfortable enough – many viewers find it shocking that she casually prepared bath salts, hoping Prince Harry (Martin) would soak in them.

Instead of using Epsom salt and Himalayan salt together carelessly, the homemaker-in-training mistakenly overlooks the correct measurement of these ingredients. This oversight leaves one of her team members questioning from behind the camera, “Is there a specific amount of salt I should be handling here?

Markle prefers to keep her focus broad, simply responding “Quite a lot” instead of delving into particulars, as it appears she’s improvising with the recipe at hand.

She says, “I’m quite liberal with the salt in my bath, as you can tell from my expression, I don’t worry much about precise measurements.

As it turns out, her mixture doesn’t come close to filling the jar she planned to put it in.

She quickly exclaims, “I need to make this more substantial,” as she pours in additional Epsom salt to compensate for an earlier mistake in measurements.

She places a sachet filled with dried lavender and rosebuds atop the jar, referring to it as a “teabag for the bathtub.

She expresses her delight in hosting as the unexpected touches she provides throughout the day, ensuring a thoughtful experience from morning to night, is what she cherishes, wrapping up the jar and adding a ribbon to it.

‘I want everyone to come feeling really, really comforted when they’re in our house.’

Instead of providing comfort, there are concerns raised by plant extractors and skincare specialists about Meghan Markle’s bath salt mix. They caution that it could lead to rashes, hives, or even burns on the skin due to the absence of a ‘carrier oil.’ This is important because arnica and lavender oils can have potent, potentially harmful effects without this oil to moderate their volatile properties.

As a die-hard essential oil enthusiast, I always make sure to pair my precious oils with carrier oils like jojoba, coconut, almond, primrose, or grapeseed. These carrier oils help in softening the potent effects of essential oils on my skin, reducing any potential irritation. It’s a must-have practice for me to ensure a safe and enjoyable aromatherapy experience!

When using essential oils topically, it’s crucial to blend them with base or carrier oils in a ratio of no less than 8 parts carrier oil for every 1 part essential oil.

Instead of applying a carrier oil, it appeared that Markle merely skipped this step when she added three drops of lavender essence and at least two eye droppers full of arnica oil to her salt blend.

Christopherson described that amount of undiluted arnica as ‘a crap ton.’

She mentioned that the reason she was visibly uncomfortable while watching it was because, as she explained in her 18-minute video, essential oils are unregulated substances which, when used excessively, can cause skin irritation.

Instead of casually handing over an essential oil and saying something like “Enjoy yourself!”, as Christopherson pointed out, it isn’t advisable.

She advised viewers trying Markle’s recipe to forget entirely about her past actions.

According to Christopherson’s observation, she often gives the impression of being a versatile individual, proficient in areas such as cooking, beauty, fashion, health, and many more subjects.

Based on my observation, she isn’t familiar with essential oils at the moment. Therefore, I would advise you to exercise caution when using them. In other words, be mindful and careful.

And she’s not the only skin expert weighing in.

According to the Tisserand Institute, an organization that provides education on essential oils from industry professionals, Epsom salts are not effective at fully dissolving essential oils.

To prevent potential skin irritation, always mix essential oils with a carrier substance such as vegetable oil before application.

Dr. Alexandra Bowles, a board-certified dermatologist at MONA Dermatology in Ohio, explained to Daily Mail that while she doesn’t consider it inherently harmful, combining multiple scents and salts might lead to irritation or sensitivities in some cases, particularly for people with allergies or children who have sensitive skin.

She emphasized that I’m fully on board with helping my patients create their own skincare products, as far as they are safe and agreeable to their skin.

A user going by @_Genevieves_, who appears to be supportive of royalty and has shown disapproval towards Markle in past posts, offered a critical take on the bath salts recipe: ‘Since essential oils are not soluble in water, they tend to stay on the surface when added to a bath without a suitable dispersant. This can cause them to come into direct contact with your skin.’

Appearing to have overlooked something in the mix, the user found it not just uncomfortable to observe but also careless and potentially hazardous, remarking, “With Love, Meghan”!

viewer comments suggested that Markle and Netflix ought to have added a warning advising pregnant women, individuals with high blood pressure or other health issues, to consult their physician prior to utilizing the salt mixtures.

Others advised doing a patch test to check for any skin reactions to the concoction.

YouTuber Stef the Alter Nerd wonders if Meghan Markle, her brand As Ever, Actual Productions, and even Netflix could face a lawsuit if someone tries the bath salt recipe they promoted and it causes skin burns. Stef finds this situation utterly unbelievable.

‘What’s a little dermatitis between besties??’ one Reddit poster quipped.

There were some viewers who found Markle helpful and charming.

A surprise find for me, but exactly what I needed – the type of content I didn’t realize I had been lacking,” said one Reddit user.

In this version, the meaning of the original sentence is preserved, while using simpler and more natural language.

The show genuinely sparked my motivation to finally tackle long-overdue home improvement tasks that have been on my list for quite some time.

‘Such a genuinely cozy show,’ added a third.

But several marveled at Markle’s seeming lack of preparation.

As an utterly devoted admirer, I can’t help but wonder if she had any rehearsals for this performance. It almost seems as if she believes herself infallible, neglecting the need for preparation. But from where I stand, it appears that Netflix is merely allowing her to hang herself with her own inadequate preparations at this point.

‘Whoever edited and put this together secretly does not like her lololol,’ posted another.

It seemed inevitable that Markle would face comparisons to America’s favorite DYIer.

‘Martha Stewart certainly has nothing to worry about,’ reads one Reddit commenter.

Some reactions reflected not just viewers’ feelings about Markle, but also their own families.

This person’s hospitality style seems reminiscent of how my late mother used to host, where appearance was crucial but not necessarily the quality of the food or functioning items. It was more about creating an aesthetically pleasing environment with less emphasis on practicality.

Many spectators found themselves intrigued by the questionable likelihood that any guest would bathe within such a residence, even one belonging to royalty.

‘Maybe it’s just me, but I never take a bath at someone else’s home,’ one Reddit poster wrote.

‘Sitting in someone else’s tub is a nightmare for me,’ posted another.

Others cautioned that excessive contact with salt could potentially harm not only the skin, but also sensitive areas such as a woman’s intimate regions.

The original post suggests that the bath salts were likely marketed towards a female audience. It implies that the intelligence level of those who use these products is low, referring to them as ‘squaddies.’ Additionally, it mentions that excessive Epsom salts in a bath can cause discomfort for women in intimate areas.

The post hints at the bath salts being intended for female users. It seems to suggest that those who use these products may not be particularly intelligent, referring to them as ‘users.’ Furthermore, it points out that too much Epsom salt in a bath could potentially cause discomfort for women down there.

‘Enjoy your elevated minty vaginal infections, Squaddies!’ reads another.

The Daily Mail’s requests for comment from Markle were not returned.
