Meghan Markle recently attended a book event to support her friend and fellow writer, Courtney Adamo. This appearance is part of a series of public appearances she’s been making.
Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, recently visited Godmothers bookstore in Summerland, California, a small town near her and Prince Harry’s $29 million home in Montecito. The visit was a small, personal event.
During the conversation, Markle rarely speaks about her and Prince Harry’s four-year-old daughter, Princess Lilibet Diana, but she did share a glimpse into what family life is like for them at home.
The royal couple are closely connected to Godmothers, an organization started by their friends Jennifer Rudolph Walsh and Victoria Jackson, and supported financially by Oprah Winfrey.
The bookstore’s unique name came about thanks to Prince Harry, who playfully called literary agent Walsh, makeup artist Jackson, and Oprah Winfrey his ‘fairy godmothers’.
Inside the bookstore, a photo of the couple from the grand opening of Godmothers’ in 2024 is on display. It’s located near books by local authors, including Prince Harry’s 2023 memoir, Spare, and Meghan Markle’s 2021 children’s book, The Bench.
Meghan Markle joined Adamo, co-founder of the well-known UK parenting blog Babyccino Kid, at an event on Thursday to talk about her new book, The Family Home, which offers ideas for creating a joyful and family-friendly living space.

The in-store event with Markle was so popular that it quickly sold out, and many more people watched it live online through Godmothers’ Substack.
Before sharing her achievements, Meghan Markle was presented to the Godmothers audience as a highly influential woman.
She quickly joined Adamo, a close friend, and Jackson, the co-founder of Godmothers, on stage. Jackson was also acting as the host for the event.
I was completely captivated by Meghan’s recent look! She looked absolutely stunning in a simple but chic brown tank top and slacks, really showing off her toned arms. Her hair was pulled back in a sleek bun, and she kept her makeup natural and minimal – it was such a polished and effortless vibe.
Just so everyone knows, I’ve been friends with Adamo since our college days,” Meghan Markle shared with the audience.
Meghan Markle explained that she first met Andrea Adamo when they were both seventeen years old, and they discussed how different their childhoods had been.
Meghan Markle explained that her childhood was quite different from what some might assume. While she didn’t come from a tulip farm, she mentioned growing up in a small apartment in Los Angeles.
‘I learned so many things from Courtney,’ Markle stressed.
She remembered when she and Adamo, her sorority sister at Northwestern University, had planned a trip back to school in Chicago from their homes in California in 2001.
She explained to the shocked audience that they had been scheduled to fly to Chicago, but the trip was cancelled because of the events of 9/11.
We drove from Los Angeles to Chicago, a 30-hour trip spread over three days – about 10 hours each day. It happened during a particularly sensitive and emotional period for the nation.
Meghan Markle explained that the experience highlighted how crucial community is and what people truly need when they’re seeking security and comfort.
‘And there’s no safer place that you feel than in your home.’
Meghan Markle then surprised everyone by mentioning her and Prince Harry’s daughter, Lilibet, during the discussion.

The couple has two children: six-year-old Prince Archie Harrison and their daughter, Lilibet, who was born in 2021.
Markle mentioned Lilibet while describing a practice called ‘rose and thorn,’ where people talk about a highlight and a lowlight of their day.
Markle explained that this method is especially useful when children start responding with only ‘yes’ or ‘no.’
‘Our daughter she’s four and she’s a very strong personality and she’s incredible,’ Markle said.
Okay, so she was on stage, and I was completely captivated, obviously. Then I heard myself ask, completely casually, ‘What’s your rose and your thorn?’ – it’s just something I had to know! And she just beamed and said, ‘My day was just a blast!’ Seriously, the whole audience erupted in laughter, but honestly, just hearing her say that was enough for me. It was perfect.
Meghan Markle explained that the ‘rose and thorn’ practice is one of several traditions she and Prince Harry have adopted within their family.
She shared that her family—including Harry and their children—has a special blanket they call the ‘healing blanket.’ It was a gift from Jackson, a co-founder of Godmother.
Whenever one of them isn’t feeling well, they always reach for the ‘healing blanket.’
During a conversation about essential travel habits, Meghan Markle shared that she starts each day by playing music throughout her home.
‘First thing I do when I wake up in the morning is turn the music on in the house,’ she shared.
For these reasons, Markle carries a small, portable speaker with her. She also makes sure to always have a candle nearby.
Okay, so this might sound a little weird, but I always have to bring a candle with me when I travel. Seriously, it’s non-negotiable. I’m super sensitive to smells, and for me, a certain scent just instantly makes a place feel like home. It’s like, no matter where I am, that candle is my little piece of comfort and familiarity. It just… grounds me, you know?
During the conversation, the celebrity confessed she often feels a lot of pressure to make sure her dinner parties at her and Harry’s $29 million home are perfect for her guests.

Instead of worrying about small things or sticking to a rigid plan, she urged people to concentrate on enjoying their homes and spending time with family and friends.
To make hosting easier and more relaxed, Meghan Markle sets up her kitchen so guests can help themselves, which she really enjoys.
Following our conversation, I really wanted to create a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for our guests. So, we headed out to the bookstore’s patio where I was able to share a little something special – a glass of Sauvignon Blanc from my wine line, As Ever. It’s all about those little touches, and I think everyone really enjoyed it!
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were last seen together publicly in September 2024 at the opening of the Godmothers’ club, a glamorous event with many famous guests.
Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres, along with Ellen’s wife Portia de Rossi, were among the many celebrities who attended.
Godmothers, created by founders Walsh and Jackson, aims to be a central gathering place for Montecito, much like a town square. It’s housed in an elegant white barn and conveniently located next to a beachside cafe.
Montecito, where Harry and Meghan have lived since 2020, is a town known for being home to many wealthy and famous people.
The bookstore’s interior design is inspired by Californian style, but created by TV designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard, who is originally from Lewisham.
The room features large portraits of influential women like Maya Angelou and Eleanor Roosevelt. It also includes a cozy fireplace, a comfortable sheepskin armchair, and a spacious stage.

The second floor is home to a lounge where members who pay $200-a-month can relax.
Last year, Jackson explained that the Godmothers community is like having people who genuinely cheer you on, offer support, and stand up for you – they’re like the family you choose.
Meghan Markle and her husband looked comfortable and happy at the event, posing for pictures with the organization’s founders and enthusiastically supporting them.
Since Meghan and Harry moved to California in 2020, Jackson has been a close friend. She previously shared her hope that her support group, Godmothers, would be a comforting and secure environment for them.
‘Seeing them be able to come here and be in a safe space… it’s what we want it to be.’
