Mega Evolution returns to Pokémon TCG in 2025

Mega Evolution cards make a comeback in 2025. Are you ready?

During the Pokémon Presents live broadcast, it was revealed that Mega Evolution cards would make a comeback, set to debut in the card sets scheduled for 2025.

Although the trailer didn’t disclose details about upcoming sets with Mega Evolution Pokemon, it did reveal two cards: Mega Lucario EX and Mega Gardevoir EX to the enthusiasts.

Examining the two examples of Mega Evolution Pokemon suggests that future cards of this type may include powerful moves and skills that could significantly impact the game, given that they permit the opponent to take three Prize cards when defeated.

Both cards also carry the regulatory symbol “I,” suggesting that Mega Evolution Pokemon could potentially make an appearance a few months following the launch of the Journey Together and Destined Rivals collections.

Due to the ongoing development of the latest Mega Pokemon cards, it’s challenging to accurately gauge the performance of the preview cards, particularly in relation to how they might influence the Standard game format.

A brief history of Mega Evolution Pokémon cards

In 2014, the concept of Mega Evolution was introduced to the Pokémon Trading Card Game with the XY series, showcasing the mega-evolved forms of Venusaur and Blastoise. The highly popular Charizard later received its Mega Evolution cards in the Flash Fire set that came after it.

In contrast to the Mega Pokémon cards from 2025, the ones during the XY era were labeled as “M Pokémon-EX,” a type of Pokémon-EX that shares the same rule box with contemporary Pokémon ex cards. This means that if an opponent knocks out a Pokémon-EX card, they can only claim two Prize cards instead of the usual number.

In the most recent collection showcasing Mega Evolution Pokemon, which belongs to the Sun & Moon era and was launched in 2019, there was just one additional Mega Pokemon – presented as a TAG TEAM Pokemon GX card, specifically Mega Lopunny and Jigglypuff GX.
