According to reports, Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal will come together at the 98th Academy Awards on March 15th, which will be broadcast on ABC and Hulu, to pay tribute to the memory of their friend and director, Rob Reiner.
The popular romantic comedy actress, age 64, and a renowned 77-year-old comedian will share memories of the filmmaker during the In Memoriam segment, alongside other actors who appeared in his movies, as reported by Variety.
Ryan and Crystal starred as Sally and Harry, friends who fall in love, in Nora Ephron’s popular 1989 movie directed by Rob Reiner. The film was a critical and commercial success, earning overwhelmingly positive reviews and making nearly $93 million worldwide.
The Academy Award-nominated producer had worked with the SNL comedian before, giving him minor roles in his 1984 film This Is Spinal Tap and his 1987 movie The Princess Bride.
Danny DeVito and Billy Crystal, who have been friends for years, also appeared together in a 1976 episode of the sitcom All in the Family, DeVito’s 1987 comedy Throw Momma from the Train, and Crystal’s 1987 stand-up special, Don’t Get Me Started.
On December 14th, Crystal was seen outside the $13.5 million Brentwood home of Reiner, visibly upset and crying. This happened just hours after Reiner, 78, and his wife Michelle, 70, were found stabbed to death in their bed.
Ryan, who previously starred alongside Reiner in the 1993 romantic comedy Sleepless in Seattle, shared a tribute on Instagram three days after the couple, married for 36 years, sadly passed away.
It’s so sad to see Rob and Michelle go! As someone who believes in the power of a good love story, I always admired their commitment to each other, their belief in a little bit of magic, and their ability to find joy in everything. They really reminded us all to embrace true love and laughter – something I’ll definitely miss!
As someone who spends a lot of time thinking about how we live and connect, I’ve been deeply moved by the outpouring of hope and belief in the good within others, and the genuine love so many have for our nation. It’s hard to accept such a terrible loss, but I truly believe this isn’t the final chapter. I hold onto the hope that something positive will emerge from this tragedy – perhaps a greater understanding, or a renewed commitment to making things better.
I’m not sure, but I’d imagine they’d want it to be positive and compassionate – something that helps us understand each other better and find some peace.
The Reiners are remembered by their children, Romy, age 27, and Jake, 34. However, their son Nick, 32, has been arrested in connection with their deaths.
Nick will be back in court on April 29th at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles. He has entered a plea of not guilty to two charges of first-degree murder.
The Reiners had spent years trying to help their son with his mental health and substance abuse issues, and he’d been in and out of rehab around 17 or 18 times. He was living with them at their home when this happened.
According to Variety, Barbra Streisand is considering performing at the Oscars’ In Memoriam segment to honor Robert Redford, her co-star from ‘The Way We Were,’ who passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 16th at the age of 89.
Adrien Brody, Kieran Culkin, Mikey Madison, Zoe Saldaña, Javier Bardem, Chris Evans, Chase Infiniti, Demi Moore, Kumail Nanjiani, and Maya Rudolph are all confirmed to present at the event.
Conan O’Brien is hosting the awards show at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre for the second year in a row. This year, the show ‘Sinners’ received a record-breaking 16 nominations.
Ryan will play the role of Natalie Portman’s therapist and mentor in the upcoming Netflix romantic comedy, Good Sex, directed by Lena Dunham. Mark Ruffalo, Rashida Jones, and Role Model also star in the film, which is set to release later this year.
The three-time Golden Globe nominee recently starred alongside David Duchovny in her second movie as a director, ‘What Happens Later.’ Unfortunately, the film didn’t do well with critics and only made $3.5 million despite costing $3 million to produce.
Crystal most recently played the challenging part of Eli, a child psychiatrist grieving his wife, in the 2024 Apple TV+ thriller ‘Before’. Unfortunately, the 10-episode series didn’t receive positive reviews.
