Meet the Walz-Vance debate moderators: Margaret Brennan and Norah O'Donnell

As a seasoned movie buff with an eye for compelling narratives and a soft spot for trailblazing women in media, I find myself utterly captivated by this upcoming vice presidential debate moderated by Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan. Their life experiences, accomplishments, and resilience are as riveting as any blockbuster drama.

As a passionate movie buff, I’m excited to share that the highly anticipated debate between the vice presidential candidates of the 2024 election is taking place on Tuesday evening! I’ll be glued to CBS News as Governor Tim Walz from Minnesota squares off against Senator JD Vance from Ohio, starting at 6 p.m. (Pacific)! This promises to be a captivating encounter that you won’t want to miss!

The presidential and vice-presidential candidates will be interviewed by Norah O’Donnell, host of “CBS Evening News,” and Margaret Brennan, who regularly interrogates influential figures in Washington on “Face the Nation.” This debate, taking place at the CBS Broadcast Center on Manhattan’s West Side, will be a historic first as it will be the first time two women have moderated a general election presidential or vice-presidential debate.

CBS is broadcasting the debate on all cable news stations and major television networks, as well as streaming platforms like Paramount+ and CBS News 24/7. The debate, lasting 90 minutes, will have a total of two breaks for commercials that are four minutes each. Similar to the presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Trump, this event will not have a live audience present.

In contrast to the presidential debate held on September 10th by ABC, the moderators will abstain from fact-checking the vice-presidential candidates during their debate on Tuesday. Instead, CBS News will offer live fact-checking on their blog and through social media platforms.

These moderators possess a wealth of experience, having worked as seasoned journalists with extensive backgrounds in national politics. O’Donnell, for instance, has dedicated her entire professional life to the Beltway, and both she and Brennan have held significant roles as White House correspondents for CBS. They have also ventured globally, reporting on international news stories for the network throughout their careers.

In the 2020 vice presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Mike Pence, a record-breaking 57.9 million people tuned in, as reported by Nielsen. This event ranked as the second most-viewed vice presidential debate ever held.

Here’s what else you should know about the moderators:

At age 50, O’Donnell received mentorship from the late host of “Meet the Press,” Tim Russert. After working at Roll Call, she joined NBC’s Washington bureau as a correspondent, where Russert served as bureau chief. She confessed that she would call her Capitol Hill contacts from her car before entering the newsroom daily to avoid Russert asking, “What do you know?” in their encounters.

At the tender age of ten, O’Donnell made her debut on television by hosting an educational program in South Korea, where her father served as a military doctor and the family resided.

After the election, O’Donnell is stepping down from her anchor position at “CBS Evening News” to take on a new role as a senior correspondent, specializing in extended interviews and special programs. John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois are set to replace her, with Dickerson taking over as the main anchor and Dubois continuing his duties as a local news anchor at WCBS in New York.

Her significant accomplishment: She was the first American television reporter to hold a private conversation with a pope, which aired on CBS in May.

O’Donnell is wed to Geoff Tracy, who holds the title of a premier chef. He runs two eateries in downtown Washington D.C., and another in Chevy Chase, MD. Their shared love for food initially connected them when they met in a university cafeteria line. They exchanged vows in 2001 and have since become parents to three children.

44-year-old Brennan, originally from Connecticut and a graduate of the University of Virginia, began her career as a business reporter. Her initial role was as a producer for a program on CNBC hosted by financial news commentator Louis Rukeyser. For six years, she delved into global financial markets at Bloomberg News before transferring to the CBS Washington bureau in 2012.

In 2018, a significant shift occurred in Brennan’s life when she was appointed as the new host of “Face the Nation,” taking over from Dickerson on this esteemed Washington show, not long after discovering she was expecting her first child.

Back in 2021, I was the one who broke the news about certain individuals within the administration of then-President Trump privately discussing the activation of the 25th Amendment, prompted by the regrettable events of the U.S. Capitol siege on January 6th.

As a passionate cinephile immersed in the world of cinema, let me share my background: I was a Fulbright-Hays Scholar and delved deep into the study of Arabic at Yarmouk University in Irbid, Jordan. During my college years, I served as an intern at CNN, where I translated videotaped communications from Osama Bin Laden. My proficiency in Arabic proves particularly useful when I connect with the family of my husband, Yado Yukub – a Syrian-American serving as a judge advocate in the Marine Corps.
