Media: Falcons to sign NiKo following Shanghai Major

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the potential move of Nikola “NiKo” Kovač to Falcons has me both excited and intrigued. The Bosnian superstar has been one of the most captivating figures in Counter-Strike for quite some time now, and his moves between teams have always been a spectacle to behold.

NiKo to Falcons may actually be real this time.

It’s been reported that the renowned Bosnian gamer, Nikola “NiKo” Kovač, is on the verge of joining the Falcons team. The estimated buyout price, according to various sources, ranges between $1 million and $1.2 million. This deal is expected to be finalized post the Perfect World Major Shanghai, after which NiKo will officially become a part of the Falcons roster.

3-Year Contract for NiKo at Falcons

The proposed transaction was first mentioned by French streamer and leaker, Sebastien “KRL” Perez, in a recent posting on X. As per the post, the involved parties had reached an agreement on a buyout and were waiting for NiKo to sign the contract.

Two days after the initial Sheep Esports report, additional information emerged regarding the contract specifics and potential buyout amount. According to the subsequent report, the buyout is estimated to be between $1 – $1.2 million. Furthermore, it was announced that NiKo will sign a three-year contract with the Saudi Organization as part of this move.

Niko has consistently been a highly sought-after CS:GO player, not just because of his exceptional gaming abilities, but also due to his charismatic personality. Over the past ten years, his transitions between teams have often been among the most expensive transactions in CS. The buyout for his move to Mousesports in 2016 was said to be approximately $500k. His subsequent move to FaZe Clan reportedly cost between $750k and $1 million. Now, it seems that the Falcons are preparing to raise that figure even more.

Perfect World Shanghai Major – NiKo’s last ride with G2

If the report is accurate, the Shanghai Major will mark NiKo’s final tournament with G2 Esports. NiKo initially joined the team in October 2020 following some underwhelming in-game leadership roles with FaZe Clan. Since then, the team has experienced multiple lineup changes. The original roster featured NiKo alongside French legend Kenny “kennyS” Schrub.

Initially, the lineup wasn’t good enough, causing KennyS to be sidelined. This shift eventually led to the formation of the G2 roster that reached the finals at PGL Stockholm 2021. From 2022-2023, G2 became a truly global team, with Ilya “m0NESY” Osipov joining as the signing that would significantly impact their performance. This new lineup went on to secure four championship titles, including IEM Cologne and IEM Katowice.

By the close of 2023, whispers were escalating about NiKo potentially joining the Falcons team as it was being formed. However, at the last minute, he made an unexpected change of direction and remained with G2 instead. This decision left the Falcons in a state of uncertainty without their star player. Additionally, it caused a significant shift in G2’s strategy as well.

Originally, G2 planned to bring in new players to fill the spots vacated by NiKo and jks. The idea was to have these newcomers step up and continue the team’s tradition of superstardom. However, when NiKo chose to stay with his Berlin organization, G2 had to rethink their strategy and instead signed Nemanja “nexa” Isaković. This misstep led to about six months of a troubled lineup, which ultimately prompted the recent changes in the team’s roster.

Is Falcons the right home for NiKo?

For NiKo, triumphing at IEM Katowice and IEM Cologne have been the pinnacles of his G2 journey so far. However, what he yearns for most, a major championship, continues to evade him. Not only has he yet to claim a major title, but his closest chance came with an exceptional rifle-centric performance in 2021. Despite forming superteams, experimenting with unique IGLs, and even taking on the IGL role himself, NiKo hasn’t found success.

With Danny “zonic” Sørensen, the most accomplished coach in CS on board, Niko is optimistic that his long-held dream can finally become a reality for the Falcons team. Although they already possess some talented players, what truly sets them apart is their substantial budget and ambitious goals. Whether these elements will coalesce to bring success remains to be seen.

Esports.gg contacted Peter “dupreeh” Rasmussen and Danny “zonic” Sørensen to get their thoughts on the recent report.
