MCU’s Mephisto Debut Was Way Too Late, What Went Wrong?

As a die-hard movie buff, let me issue a heads up: This discussion might unveil some secrets from Ironheart’s storyline, specifically the long-awaited appearance of Marvel’s Mephisto. Now, I must confess, it feels somewhat out of sync. In the comics, Mephisto was a colossal supernatural adversary, and fans have been speculating about his MCU entrance for eons. Yet, here we are, with his grand introduction occurring much later than many of us had anticipated.

In the comic books, Mephisto initially appeared as an adversary for Silver Surfer but soon became a formidable enemy to many prominent heroes. He governs a fiery realm and enjoys manipulating human fears by being perceived as the Devil, striking Faustian bargains, and attempting to seize souls. While the introduction of Mephisto in the Marvel Cinematic Universe promises excitement, I must admit that the timing of his debut at the end of Phase 5 raises some concerns.

Mephisto Has Made His MCU Debut (Finally)

4 Years After WandaVision

In the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe series titled Ironheart, the main character Riri Williams (played by Dominque Thorne) encounters Parker Robbins, also known as The Hood (Anthony Ramos). This villain leads a gang of thieves who are after more power and wealth, having been enhanced by a mystical red hood. Contrasting with the comic book lore where Dormammu empowers Parker Robbins’ Hood, it is Mephisto who provides the source of power for the Hood in this MCU version.

In the concluding chapters of Ironheart’s series, I had the privilege of portraying Mephisto in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At first, I struck a bargain with Parker and bestowed upon him the hood. Subsequently, when Riri Williams claimed the hood from Parker, Mephisto sealed another deal, resurrecting her departed friend Natalie (apparently this was done at the cost of Riri’s soul). This entrance was quite thrilling, though fans of the MCU have been eagerly anticipating Mephisto since 2021’s WandaVision.

In the popular series WandaVision, Mephisto wasn’t physically present. Instead, the show’s mystical elements intensified as Wanda Maximoff developed her full potential as the Scarlet Witch, leading some viewers to speculate and find supposed hints. However, these clues were not intentionally planted for Mephisto’s introduction. The first genuine setup for Mephisto didn’t occur until the 2024 spin-off series Agatha All Along, where his name was subtly mentioned.

It’s Hard To Guess Where Mephisto Might Fit In The MCU’s Future

Marvel’s Trying To End The Multiverse Saga

It seems promising that Mephisto has only just made his debut in Ironheart. However, it’s a bit unclear where we might encounter Mephisto next in the Marvel Cinematic Universe considering the current release schedule. As Phase 5 has concluded with Ironheart, and Phase 6 is heavily focused on wrapping up the Multiverse Saga, there may not be many opportunities for Mephisto to appear in the near future.

At present, we’re aware that the following movies are set to be released: “Fantastic Four: First Steps”, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”, “Avengers: Doomsday”, and “Avengers: Secret Wars”. For television shows, we can expect to see “Wonder Man”, the second season of “Daredevil”, a special titled “The Punisher”, and “Vision Quest”. Although the title “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is reminiscent of a comic featuring Mephisto, none of these projects seem to heavily feature the demon lord or indicate a supernatural theme.

Mephisto might appear anywhere at his discretion, but it still feels unusual that he’s making an entrance at the end of Phase 5. It seems like there isn’t a logical progression for the character, but there probably is a sound explanation behind this timing.

Why Did Marvel Wait So Long To Debut Mephisto?

Ironheart Had Some Major Delays

The production for Ironheart apparently concluded in the year 2022. Initially planned for a fall 2023 release, the movie has experienced several postponements, with some of the delays being attributed to recent Hollywood strikes that ultimately moved its premiere to 2025.

During that period, Marvel Studios underwent significant changes as production pace started to decelerate. Fortunately, Disney no longer insists on such a high volume of content from Marvel, allowing for a shift in focus towards quality over quantity. This change appears to have resulted in some ideas being abandoned, and it’s possible the original plan for Mephisto could be among them.

It’s been disclosed that Zeke Stane, who is Ironheart’s character, initially planned to establish the Serpent Society. They were meant to first appear in Captain America: Brave New World as a team of cyborgs when the series was intended to lead up to the movie. Additionally, Ironheart subtly hints at possible plotlines for Strange Academy, an MCU series that has recently halted development (likely due to delays in production).

It’s plausible that Mephisto was initially intended to appear more often before Phase 5 wraps up, but it seems his character plan might have been discarded as well. Consequently, it wouldn’t shock me if there isn’t even a comprehensive plan for Mephisto’s future in the MCU. Given Marvel Studios’ current focus on the next two Avengers films and bringing the Multiverse Saga to a fitting end, it appears they might be concentrating their efforts elsewhere.

Marvel’s Plans Have Shifted, But I Think There’s Still Hope For Mephisto

We Just Might Have To Wait A While…

Given the adjustments made to Marvel’s Phase 4 and 5, it’s clear that things have taken a different turn (including abandoning Kang the Conqueror as initially planned). However, there remains a glimmer of anticipation that Mephisto could yet find his way into the MCU’s future. It might be a while before we get to witness Sacha Baron Cohen’s portrayal of one of Marvel’s top villains in an upcoming MCU production other than Ironheart.

Up until now, the only thing confirmed about the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) after the Multiverse Saga ends is that there will be a significant emphasis on mutants, as the MCU introduces its version of the X-Men. Additionally, whispers suggest that we might delve deeper into both cosmic and supernatural realms. If this turns out to be true, Mephisto could potentially emerge as a major antagonist in future MCU stories centered around the supernatural.

In a likely match, Sacha Baron Cohen’s character Mephisto could prove to be as formidable an adversary as Josh Brolin’s Thanos among the Avengers. If fortune favors us, preparations for Mephisto’s potential appearance in the MCU may already be underway, or at least being considered, following the release of Ironheart.

All episodes of Ironheart are streaming now on Disney+.
