MCU’s Avengers Has an Official New Leader and It’s Not Captain America

Approximately six years after Steve Rogers (Captain America) led the Avengers in their climactic battle against Thanos in “Endgame”, it appears that Marvel Studios is preparing to introduce a new leader for the upcoming Avengers squad. Instead, it seems the team will be directed by one of the freshest characters within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Who is the new leader of the MCU’s Avengers?

In a recent chat with Variety, director Matt Shakman, from The Fantastic Four: First Steps, has shared that the studio intends for Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic to assume the role of Avengers commander in the upcoming films, Doomsday and Secret Wars. He further mentioned that casting Mister Fantastic was the toughest decision, given his crucial importance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s future.

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but admit that finding the right actor for Reed was no easy feat. He’s not just a nerdish scientist secluded in his lab, but also a loving husband and devoted father who would go to great lengths to safeguard his family. And let’s not forget, he’s the one steering the Avengers! Recognizing this multifaceted character, I understood that our portrayal had to encompass all these dimensions.

Avengers: Doomsday is being helmed by the filmmakers behind Avengers: Endgame, Joe and Anthony Russo, who are working from a script penned by Stephen McFeely. In this upcoming sequel, Oscar winner Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role as Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom. The star-studded cast also includes Tom Hiddleston, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Chris Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Letitia Wright, Tenoch Huerta Mejia, Kelsey Grammer, Lewis Pullman, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, and Danny Ramirez.

In the sixth part, we can expect the comeback of X-Men actors such as Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), James Marsden (Cyclops), and Channing Tatum (Gambit. However, as hinted by Feige after the viral casting announcement video, there are more cast members yet to be unveiled in upcoming announcements.

Currently, it’s planned that Avengers: Doomsday will hit the big screens on December 18, 2026, and afterwards, Avengers: Secret Wars is set to be released on December 17, 2027.
