MCU Star’s Thriller is a Streaming Hit With a 91% Audience Score!
Although the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) may no longer be as dominant in popular culture as it was before, it continues to stand as a significant Hollywood franchise. Marvel played a crucial role in revitalizing Robert Downey Jr.’s career with his Iron Man debut in 2008 and also propelled actors like Chris Hemsworth, Tom Holland, and Chris Evans into stardom. In the wake of Avengers: Endgame (2019), recent MCU films have been geared towards introducing a new crop of superheroes, providing opportunities for fresh talent to shine.
2021’s “Black Widow” introduced Florence Pugh to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and catapulted her to stardom beyond Marvel. Similarly, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” provided a springboard for Simu Liu, who was primarily recognized from “Kim’s Convenience.” Although Pugh has made a bigger impact as a newcomer in Marvel, Liu recently starred in a survival thriller that left audiences impressed.
Last Breath Has Become A Streaming Hit
The Simu Liu Movie Beats Out The Competition
I must admit, “Last Breath,” directed by Alex Parkinson, has been an unexpected hit among viewers on streaming platforms, barely two months after its debut. This gripping film recounts the harrowing true tale of a team of deep-sea divers who valiantly struggle against the relentless ocean to save their comrade ensnared at depths that could as well be another world. In this thrilling saga, Liu embodies Dave Yuasa, while Woody Harrelson breathes life into Duncan Allock, Finn Cole becomes Chris Lemons, and Cliff Curtis portrays Andre Jenson.
According to recent data from Reelgood, “Last Breath” is the sixth most-watched streaming movie in the U.S. during the week of April 24 – 30. This film, which can be found on Peacock, surpasses movies like “The Order” (2024), “G20” (2025), and “A Complete Unknown” (2024) in popularity, but it doesn’t quite match the viewership of “Babygirl” (2024) or “The Accountant” (2016). In the end, “Havoc” (2025) took the top position. You can find the complete top 10 list below:

What This Means For Last Breath
The Film’s Reception Explained
The survival thriller on Rotten Tomatoes is currently receiving a high acclaim from critics, with most reviewers commending the movie for its powerful performances, particularly by Harrelson, and some truly gripping underwater danger scenes. In her review for ScreenRant titled “Last Breath”, Mae Abdulbaki gives the film an 8 out of 10, acknowledging that the director effectively portrays the remarkable true story it is based on.
Last Breath eschews flashiness; it’s not brimming with spectacular action scenes or lavish thrills. Instead, it relies on the power of its story to captivate, and it truly does. This trust in its simple, traditional style also challenges us to become immersed in the narrative. The way the story unfolds is unusual as well. It’s direct yet rich with character development and high stakes tied to its central tension.
A high audience rating of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes indicates that Last Breath was particularly impactful for regular cinema-goers, but regrettably, this did not translate into strong box office earnings. With an approximate production budget of $24 million, the film managed to gross just $23 million worldwide in ticket sales. In other words, Last Breath only made its production cost back, but didn’t generate additional profits. However, the movie’s streaming performance shows that compelling storytelling can find its audience, and it appears that more people are now able to experience the gripping true tale.
