A well-known actor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe jokingly referred to themselves as “your third-favorite Thunderbolt” before returning for the new movie, Avengers: Doomsday. The Thunderbolts team was revealed in May 2025 and quickly became popular with fans, promising a long-lasting and interesting group – even though the team’s formation was based on a deception. The team includes several established and beloved characters from the MCU’s 17-year history, with varying levels of popularity.
Actor Wyatt Russell, known for playing John Walker, shared a video on Instagram accepting a challenge to sign a petition supporting the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. The video, posted on the Lake Hour Instagram page – which Russell co-owns and is associated with an alcoholic beverage company – began with Russell jokingly referring to himself as “your third-favorite Thunderbolt” before addressing the challenge.
Wyatt Russell reprised his role as John Walker, also known as U.S. Agent, in the 2025 Marvel film Thunderbolts. This was his second appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following his debut in the 2021 Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, where he took on the mantle of Captain America after Steve Rogers stepped down. After the events of Thunderbolts, Walker joined a new team called the “New Avengers,” continuing his heroic work with characters like Yelena Belova, the Winter Soldier, and the Red Guardian.
As a critic, I’m getting excited about Avengers: Doomsday – it’s shaping up to be the big team-up event for Phase 6 of the MCU and the fifth time we’ll see Earth’s Mightiest Heroes together on the big screen. What’s particularly interesting is seeing so many Captain Americas – Russell is one of three actors confirmed to be reprising the role! And get this – he’ll be fighting alongside over two dozen other stars against none other than Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. It’s a massive cast and promises an epic showdown.
Wyatt Russell’s Expected Role in Avengers: Doomsday After Thunderbolts*

John Walker wasn’t eager to join the Thunderbolts at first, but he quickly proved himself a valuable team member, especially when fighting alongside Sentry and prioritizing saving lives. Now, sporting a damaged shield and updated costume, he’ll continue working with the team – which has rebranded from the Thunderbolts to Avengers: Doomsday under the New Avengers banner.
Walker will keep collaborating with characters like Bucky Barnes, and will team up again with Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie, as well as his own Avengers crew. After exploring a possible storyline about who gets to use the name “Avengers,” both groups will need to work together when Victor Von Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., puts reality itself in danger.
Viewers can expect to see U.S. Agent grow as a hero, developing a stronger moral compass and building relationships with his new teammates. He’ll also encounter a world of heroes with abilities he’s never seen before, particularly with the X-Men playing a prominent role in the story.
Marvel is keeping details about what happens with U.S. Agent and the New Avengers a secret for now. But fans are excited about the possibility of getting a sneak peek at Doomsday later this year and seeing how he’ll fight in what could be his biggest MCU battle yet.
